Full description
This is a 3-hour experience from Kyoto, built around Pontocho Alley, Local restaurant and Gion-Shijo Station. It is run by Traveling Tokyo, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.
Gion is Kyoto's historic entertainment district, the streets of wooden machiya houses around Hanamikoji where the geiko and maiko of the Gion Kobu district still work. They are working professionals on their way to engagements, not performers for the street, and Kyoto has banned photography in the private lanes; an evening walk with a guide who explains the ochaya system is the respectful way to see it. Tea ceremony sessions in Gion teach the basic form of matcha preparation in an hour. Kimono rental for a day, with dressing and hair, is an established business around the district and is welcomed rather than resented.
The price covers Expert English-speaking guide, Walking tour, 13 Japanese dishes at 4 eateries, 2 complimentary drinks and Food at 1 stall, 1 izakaya, 1 traditional eatery and 1. It does not cover Gratuities, so budget for those separately. Everything included is listed in full on this page; if something is not on that list, assume it is not in the price.
Starbucks Coffee - Kyoto Sanjo-ohashi Bridge. We need at least one day's notice, and we confirm the date with Traveling Tokyo before treating your booking as final. If they cannot take your date we tell you and refund you rather than leave you waiting.

Our guide Malu took us to nice food places and small alleys that we would not have found by ourselves. There was a lot of food and 2 alcoholic drinks included. We weren’t hungry after the tour and everything was yummy! Malu told us about Japan history with a big focus on Geisha. It was very interesting! I recommend this tour!
We really enjoyed our evening with Tara. She’s fabulous company and we had the best evening. Thoroughly enjoyed the restaurants and watching the chef cook Takoyaki in front of us was a highlight. The tempura restaurant was so fun and authentic. The tour gave us the perfect opportunity to experience Kyoto food. Loved the dessert too Taiyaki from the street vendor. What a treat!
