This is a 2-hour experience in Kyoto. It is run by Kendo Experience, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.

Gion is Kyoto's historic entertainment district, the streets of wooden machiya houses around Hanamikoji where the geiko and maiko of the Gion Kobu district still work. They are working professionals on their way to engagements, not performers for the street, and Kyoto has banned photography in the private lanes; an evening walk with a guide who explains the ochaya system is the respectful way to see it. Tea ceremony sessions in Gion teach the basic form of matcha preparation in an hour. Kimono rental for a day, with dressing and hair, is an established business around the district and is welcomed rather than resented.

Fantastic workshop! No prior experience or knowledge is necessary to do this activity. The shop’s atmosphere was cozy and the instructors were really friendly and helpful. I’m a little reluctant to share this hidden gem, but it was absolutely worth going to! We even got a little handwritten thank-you note that was adorable! Also, make sure you send in your design prior to coming in so you can get the most out of your activity :)

Great experience! I was amazed that, even as a complete beginner, I was able to create something so beautiful. Filling in the design with the tufting gun was incredibly fun and very satisfying. The staff were exceptionally kind, patient, and helpful throughout the experience. I’m planning to display my finished piece in my bedroom! 😊
