Full description
This is a 4-hour experience in Kyoto. It is run by Kyoto Fun, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.
Kyoto was Japan's capital for over a thousand years until 1868 and has 17 UNESCO-listed sites among some 2,000 temples and shrines. The big three are Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion, covered in gold leaf and best in morning light; Kiyomizu-dera, the wooden stage on the eastern hills with the Higashiyama lanes of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka below it; and Fushimi Inari's gates. Nijo Castle has the nightingale floors that squeak against intruders, and Ryoan-ji the rock garden. Temples open around 8:00 or 9:00 and close at 17:00, and the city bus is slow; a day with a driver or a guide who orders the stops against the crowds is the difference between four sights and seven.
The price covers Guide fee, Temple admission and Transportation. It does not cover Transportation back to the meeting point, Lunch and Hot Springs fee, so budget for those separately. Everything included is listed in full on this page; if something is not on that list, assume it is not in the price.
Kyoto Fun sends the meeting point and time by email as soon as the booking is confirmed. We need at least one day's notice, and we confirm the date with Kyoto Fun before treating your booking as final. If they cannot take your date we tell you and refund you rather than leave you waiting.

our guide Kevin was great! we learned so much about the history of the area. I will be sure to tell all my friends to ask for Kevin!
Phillipe was extremely knowledgeable and interesting to learn from. he was also passionate about the forest and the wild life and this came through strongly in our discussions. it was a great experience that we really enjoyed enjoyed.
Kevin was very knowledgable and gave us a lot of historical and cultural context.
This tour was one of my favorite days of our 16 days in Japan. Visiting Mount Kurama, the temple and Kifune Shrine was truly magical! Chris was a wonderful guide as he was easy to chat with, and his stories about the history of the area made the trip more meaningful. He kindly took photos for us and the pace of the hike was perfect. He also showed us some special hidden spots that we would have never known about as tourists - it was so fun! This is such a special place to visit while in Kyoto and we are grateful for this tour.
Highly recommend! We had a wonderful hike. Our guide Kevin was helpful, friendly and informative.
This was really fun! Simone was a great guide. It was an easy and scenic train ride to the mountain. A beautiful hike! Lots of uphill to get started, about 1000 feet of elevation gain via stairs. Worth it!
Really Good Kevin was really knowledgeable and went out of his way to share that with my sister and I as we navigated the tour. Plus a nice hike, I would’ve loved the natural springs but my sister isn’t keen on them but I’m sure they’re lovely haha. 10/10
It was a great experience including hidden spots. Chris was a fantastic guide. I can only endorse it when anyone is in Kyoto.
This tour was incredible! Nature was on our side with some light snow on a sunny day. We even saw two deer on our way up. Our guide Philippe was great and so knowledgeable. We learned so much, and Philippe took us to some lesser known spots on the mountain, which made for an unforgettable tour. Would highly recommend!
Philippe did an amazing job with us. by luck we ended up being the only folks on the tour, and he was able to customize it a bit for us. we got to spend lots of time at Kurama, and even got to see the crypt and maze underneath the temple. He shared lots of the area's history and legends with us, and we got along very well with him. The onsen at the end is glorious, do *not* miss it -it is de rigueur after hiking in the mountains. What a wonderful experience all around!
Our guide was very friendly and very knowledgeable
Phillip was a fantastic guide! Knowledgeable, down to earth, and fun. He knew all the cool people most people don’t know about. Plus, the views and history are excellent. I’d highly recommend taking this tour!
