This is a 1-hour experience in Kyoto. It is run by KYOTO SHIBORI MUSEUM, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.

Kyoto was Japan's capital for over a thousand years until 1868 and has 17 UNESCO-listed sites among some 2,000 temples and shrines. The big three are Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion, covered in gold leaf and best in morning light; Kiyomizu-dera, the wooden stage on the eastern hills with the Higashiyama lanes of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka below it; and Fushimi Inari's gates. Nijo Castle has the nightingale floors that squeak against intruders, and Ryoan-ji the rock garden. Temples open around 8:00 or 9:00 and close at 17:00, and the city bus is slow; a day with a driver or a guide who orders the stops against the crowds is the difference between four sights and seven.

I spent a fantastic morning with my two daughters ages 9 & 11. The scarves look very professional and are totally unique. Our teacher was gentle and knowledgeable guiding us through every step but making sure we made the scarves. Would highly recommend. As part of the activity you have time to look in the upstairs museum whilst the scarves are drying. It’s fascinating to learn about different techniques and the time that goes into making kimono fabric. We spent about an hour and a half at the activity in total.

This was an amazing experience. The guides were so passionate and enthusiastic, and overall made the experience. It was a lot of fun and the class was quite easy, then going up into the museum afterward was beautiful and very informative! One of our highlights of our time here in Kyoto!

Mum and I loved this experience, mum had never dyed anything before and she loved it. Then to be able to see the museum as well was a real special experience for us both. Highly recommend this experience to anyone that enjoys arts and crafts.

Dying itself was fun, and you get a scarf to take with you back home. The crew was knowledgeable, so you learn a lot about the different shibori techniques in addition!

Superb experience! Beautiful quality silk scarf as a souvenir. The staff were terrific and the museum on the first floor was fabulous. Such a privilege to be guided by a team whose family has been making shibori for generations.

This spur of the moment decision was one of the best choices made on out trip so far. Jun our teacher was wonderful. She was very encouraging and made the whole experience warm and enjoyable. Admission to the museum while you project dries is a wonderful bonus. The artistry you get to experience is exquisite. We were fortunate to come at a slow time so we were able to have a very personal experience. The presentation of the scarf when finished was beyond my expectations. Wonderful time in this class learning how to dye fabric to make a beautiful scarf to take home! The guide worked with me to take me through the dyeing process and made it easy for me to do. I love my project! Walked through the museum upstairs and learned the detail work and craftsmanship involved in various Shibori techniques. They also had a shop full of beautiful items at the end. Highly recommend this class!
