This is a 2-hour experience in Kyoto. It is run by Gojo Paradiso, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.

Kyoto was Japan's capital for over a thousand years until 1868 and has 17 UNESCO-listed sites among some 2,000 temples and shrines. The big three are Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion, covered in gold leaf and best in morning light; Kiyomizu-dera, the wooden stage on the eastern hills with the Higashiyama lanes of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka below it; and Fushimi Inari's gates. Nijo Castle has the nightingale floors that squeak against intruders, and Ryoan-ji the rock garden. Temples open around 8:00 or 9:00 and close at 17:00, and the city bus is slow; a day with a driver or a guide who orders the stops against the crowds is the difference between four sights and seven.

My wife and I really enjoyed the calligraphy workshop. The workshop was held in a quiet location and the materials perfect. The Japanese instructor spoke good English with clear instructions and was very patient and helpful. We left with examples of our work that we will treasure as a memory of a lovely day in Kyoto.

The teacher is a calligraphy master With a degree in calligraphy and awards. She’s also a kind and patient teacher. She spent time individually with each of us on every exercise we did. She was supportive and encouraging. She also showed us how to write our names in kanji. The class was very well organized. There were plenty of high-quality materials. The teacher had two helpers also. It began and ended right on time. We each created a calligraphy to take home on beautiful rice paper, signed our names in kanji, and our teacher stamped it for us. In addition, we received a gift of a beautiful h

Takako is super sweet and encouraging! I found it so relaxing. We practiced different strokes and then wrote a character and our name in Japanese. She even gave a brief intro and a gift to take away with us. Great value for money and enjoyable 🥰
