Gion is Kyoto's historic entertainment district, the streets of wooden machiya houses around Hanamikoji where the geiko and maiko of the Gion Kobu district still work. They are working professionals on their way to engagements, not performers for the street, and Kyoto has banned photography in the private lanes; an evening walk with a guide who explains the ochaya system is the respectful way to see it. Tea ceremony sessions in Gion teach the basic form of matcha preparation in an hour. Kimono rental for a day, with dressing and hair, is an established business around the district and is welcomed rather than resented.

Loved wearing a kimono even though it was quite hot outside! Everyone was very lovely at the shop - they help you choosing a kimono if you ask their opinion and put it on for you. Also had my hair styled by them which I was slightly apprehensive about initially as I have very thick curls, but they did a great job. Recommend

Absolutely lovely it. Was very friendly and helpful with everything. It wasn't written on description, but you can upgrade even more when you are there. for hairdress and kimono styles. It was absolutely amazing experience I will never forget! ❤️

Initially a little hesitant to do this and so, so glad I did. Just getting dressed by the ladies was an amazing to experience the immense amount of time it takes to dress in a kimono. I had my hair done too and I really recommend it. I have some great photos to remember a truly wonderful experience going to a Tea Ceremony dressed in a beautiful kimono.

I loved the way it was organised, the guy made a what'sapp group chat and helped with finding the place. The garden was very secluded and tranquil. I loved the meditation with the short ceremony of drinking tea first. I would like more explanation about the tea in Japanese culture. It was good that we had time to ask the monk any questions about his life.

An excellent experience overall. Staff were very helpful, attentive and friendly, and lots of Kimonos & Yakuta’s to choose from. Bag storage for your personal belongings available which made it light and easy to explore Higashiyama District.
