Full description
Kyoto's eastern edge is where the city is at its best and its most spread out. Ginkaku-ji sits at the northern end, the Philosopher's Path runs two kilometres south along a canal beneath cherry trees, and the temples and gardens are strung along it at distances that make walking the whole thing a day's work and a bus tour a series of car park visits.
An e-bike solves the geometry. The assist flattens the hills at the foot of the Higashiyama range, the bikes fit riders up to two metres, and you cover the whole eastern side comfortably in four hours with time to stop properly.
That last point is the tour's actual argument. Garden entry fees are included and the guide takes you inside — a lot of Kyoto bike tours ride past the famous walls and photograph the gate. Ginkaku-ji, the Silver Pavilion, was never silvered; the shogun who built it as a retirement villa died before the plan was executed, and the restraint that resulted is precisely why the garden and its raked sand cone are considered the finer achievement.
The Philosopher's Path is named for Nishida Kitaro, who walked it daily on his way to Kyoto University, and it works best exactly as this tour uses it — as a connecting thread between temples rather than a destination.
Groups cap at eight. Helmets and the e-bike are included; lunch and hotel transfers are not. The meeting point is the operator's own rental base in Koyamacho, Kita-ku, findable on maps by name.

Tour gives a fantastic geographical and historical perspective to your Kyoto visit .. while still allowing you to visit a number of must see shrines/temples. Surprisingly beautiful/peaceful streets and river cycleways to travel along (as well as some smaller urban roads/footpaths and pedestrian crossings to pick your way respectfully through whilst sharing the morning with Kyotos local residents). Ben was a highly knowledgeable and interesting guide… perhaps content was most appropriate for adults or a keen history teen! For me though it was excellent and still provided great historical and cultural content for us even after a couple of weeks touring in Japan.

Ben was a great tour guide. Knowledgeable, patient and fun to guide us around. We are a family of 4 with 12 and 14yo. They loved seeing the sights on an e-bike it made sightseeing more enjoyable for them.
This was a fabulous experience that brought our entire family joy. My 15 year old son spoke of how beautiful the journey was, my 13 year old son proclaimed the speedy bikes were very fun, my husband spoke about how knowledgeable our guide was and I appreciated the simple route and pace having rather rusty biking skills. It was a great experience for all.
