Full description

Seeing a geiko or maiko properly is difficult and expensive. A traditional ozashiki banquet requires an introduction and costs a great deal; chasing them down Gion's lanes with a camera is both intrusive and, in the private streets, now finable.

This is the sensible middle. The Gion Kagai Art Museum, in the Yasaka Club building in the middle of Gion, stages Kyomai dance performances by a working geiko or maiko several times a day, and the ticket includes the museum's permanent exhibition.

Kyomai is Kyoto's own dance form, performed here in the Inoue style — the school associated with the Gion Kobu district, characterised by restraint, small controlled movements and a stillness that is much harder than it looks. Two pieces are performed, about fifteen minutes in total. You are close enough to see the detail of the kimono and the hair ornaments that a stage performance never gives you.

Usually one performer dances. On some days the third and fourth sessions have two.

Performances run at 13:30, 14:20, 15:00, 16:00 and 16:30, so it slots into an afternoon in Higashiyama without planning a day around it.

The permanent exhibition covers the kagai — the geiko districts — as a working culture rather than a curiosity: the training, the dress, the instruments, the seasonal calendar. Read it before the dance and the fifteen minutes make considerably more sense.

At this price it is one of the best-value cultural experiences in Kyoto, and it puts money into the district rather than taking photographs out of it.

I had a great time with my two boys. This event is the right length (two songs + optional time at the museum) for people traveling with kids to get a taste of traditional Japanese dance. Just check the age limit before booking.

When you want to pack a lot into a day in Kyoto, this is a great option. It’s authentic, it doesn’t compromise on quality, but it’s short enough to add to a busy itinerary.

The museum was very informative in sharing the history and practices of Geiko! The information is also translated in English accessible via the scanning of a qr code. I liked how it was the right amount of information and display with videos! The maiko performances was a lovely added bonus!

the Geisha's dance was exquisite. her facial expressions and body language were on point. The film on the lower level was very useful to find out about the dance unique to Kyoto.
