Full description

This is a 4-hour experience in Kyoto. It is run by iroHa cooking studio, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.

Fushimi Inari Taisha is the head shrine of Inari, the deity of rice and business, and its thousand-plus vermilion torii gates, each donated by a company or family, run in tunnels up the 233-metre Mount Inari behind the main hall. The full loop to the summit is about four kilometres and two hours; most visitors turn back at the Yotsutsuji viewpoint halfway. It is open 24 hours and free, which makes it the one big Kyoto sight you can do at dawn or after dark, when the gates are empty and lit. By nine in the morning the lower tunnels are a slow queue. The fox statues carry keys to the rice granary in their mouths.

The price covers Lunch and All seasonings and ingredients. It does not cover Gratuity and Hotel pick-up and drop-off service, so budget for those separately. Everything included is listed in full on this page; if something is not on that list, assume it is not in the price.

iroHa cooking studio sends the meeting point and time by email as soon as the booking is confirmed. We need at least one day's notice, and we confirm the date with iroHa cooking studio before treating your booking as final. If they cannot take your date we tell you and refund you rather than leave you waiting.

Such an incredible experience. An opportunity to try your hand at preparing a traditional Japanese breakfast and local specialties (in my case - inarizushi). Miho was a very kind and attentive host. She explained everything about cooking in detail, from basic ingredients to unusual specialties, as well as the differences in food preparation across prefectures and more. In addition to Japanese cuisine, we also talked about Japanese culture, traditions, and history. It was an absolutely wonderful experience and probably the best cooking class I have ever attended. When I return to Kyoto, I’ll de

We really enjoyed the experience! Miho is an amazing teacher who showed us how to make a very tasty Japanse omelet. The whole menu tasted delicious and the trip to the local supermarket really was the icing on the cake. Now we know what to look for next time we are going to cook a Japanese meal.

Miho's class was invaluable to learn how cook authentic Japanese cuisine. She has thought of everything to make sure I am able to replicate what I learned (like going to the supermarket to show what to buy and sending me the recipe book for the dishes that I cooked during class). The icing on the cake was having lunch in the gorgeous tea room with garden view in the house where the class takes place.

This was a uperb cooking class. The chef was friendly and engaging and she made the whole activity fun. The seven dishes we prepared were delicious, and the tour of the grocery was very interesting and informative.

Totally authentic and non-touristic. We got to see the inside of a Japanese home and visit a local supermarket. Even appropriate for vegetarians if you let her know in advance.

This was a great experience. We are used to cooking classes when we travel the world and this class was the best. The class location is in a typical Japanese house so it is like you are invite to someone’s home. Miho is patient and very nice. She made everything very easy. We prepared meals that we thought we would never be able to cook such as sushi, tempura, mochi and soup. All meals were flavored and delicious. After the cooking class. We enjoyed our meal in the guests room in the Japanese way. We ended the class with a visit to the supermarket where Miho translated and explained every prod

The cooling class with Miro was awesome and exceeded my expectations. Miro was a very good teacher. She was fun to be with, very passionate about what she does and patient. She explained things clearly and made sure I learnt how to do things the right way. We made several dishes including miso soup. Tempura, sushi, rolled egg, a salad and desert. By the end of the class I learnt how to make all these dishes and had a very enjoyable lunch eating them. After the cooking class Miro took me for a walk to the shops. She showed me lots of fruit and vegetables and spices used in Japanese cooking . We

We had a wonderful time. They were so organized we were able to learn how to prepare many different dishes. A fun way to spend the morning and then enjoy eating what we made.

Really good cooking class. We learnt a lot about Japanese cuisine and basic ingredients, and prepared really tasty food. We are a family with 3 young children and they adapted the menu accordingly, were very patient and kid friendly during the class. The traditional Japanese house is a lovely addition to the overall experience. Highly recommend

Late March to early April for cherry blossom, or mid-to-late November for peak autumn foliage. Kyoto sits in a basin and runs hotter in summer and colder in winter than Tokyo, even at a similar latitude. Full month-by-month figures are in our best time to visit Kyoto guide.
Kyoto never built an extensive subway — just two lines (Karasuma and Tozai) — so the city bus network does most of the work, especially for Higashiyama, Kinkaku-ji and Ginkakuji. Fushimi Inari and Arashiyama are best reached by JR rail instead. See getting around Kyoto.
Three days covers the essentials well: a day for Higashiyama and Gion, a day for Arashiyama and Kinkaku-ji, and a day for Fushimi Inari plus a Nara or Uji day trip. Our 3-day Kyoto itinerary has the full route with timing.
Arrive by 6:30-7am — the shrine is open 24/7 and free, and most visitors only walk the first 20-30 minutes anyway. Past that point the crowds thin out fast. Full hike details in our Fushimi Inari guide.
Yes — it's a public path with no entrance fee and no set hours. The trade-off is that it gets shoulder-to-shoulder by mid-morning; arrive before 8am for a nearly empty walk. See the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest guide.
Kyoto restricts photography on certain private alleys in Gion after complaints about tourists chasing and blocking geiko and maiko, with fines for violators. Public streets like Hanamikoji-dori remain open, but never chase, touch or block a real geiko/maiko anywhere. Full etiquette in our Gion geisha district guide.
Yudofu (simmered tofu, best near Nanzen-ji or Arashiyama), kaiseki and shojin ryori temple cuisine, and Nishiki Market's stalls of tako tamago and fresh yuba. Uji, just south of the city, is one of Japan's top matcha-growing regions. See the Kyoto food guide.
