Full description
This is the version of the ninja experience built for children, and it works because it commits properly rather than half-heartedly. Everyone puts on a ninja outfit, and the two hours are structured as a training session rather than a museum visit with an activity bolted on.
The training covers what ninjutsu actually was, which is more interesting than the film version: a discipline of espionage, infiltration and information-gathering practised by families in the Iga and Koga regions, whose value to a warlord lay in not being seen at all. The stealth techniques taught here — how to move quietly, how to use shadow and cover — are the part children take most seriously.
Then the equipment. A blowgun, which requires more breath control than accuracy at first, and shuriken throwing, the star-shaped blades, thrown at a target under supervision. Both are more difficult than they look and neither behaves the way films suggest.
Entry to the museum is included, so the historical collection — the armour, weapons and tools of both ninja and samurai — is part of the visit rather than an extra.
Groups cap at five, which keeps it manageable with children and means each person gets real turns rather than queuing. Instruction is in English and the venue is wheelchair accessible.
One rule to plan around: children under three cannot take part in the ninja activities, though they are welcome in the venue. The location is on the second floor of a building on Teramachi in Nakagyo-ku, in the covered arcades in the middle of the city.
