Gion is Kyoto's historic entertainment district, the streets of wooden machiya houses around Hanamikoji where the geiko and maiko of the Gion Kobu district still work. They are working professionals on their way to engagements, not performers for the street, and Kyoto has banned photography in the private lanes; an evening walk with a guide who explains the ochaya system is the respectful way to see it. Tea ceremony sessions in Gion teach the basic form of matcha preparation in an hour. Kimono rental for a day, with dressing and hair, is an established business around the district and is welcomed rather than resented.

It was a terribly wet day in Kyoto. Aruisha, our guide, made us very comfortable. our kiminos were amazing, as were all of our extra decorations and hairdos. Although the weather was terrible we really enjoyed the tea ceremony. Our visit to the Fushimi Inari Shrine was amazing. As was our visit to the Gion area. The restaurant that Aruisha took us to was a special treat, as a robot delivered our meal. A great day all round!

Our guide was absolutely fantastic! He was very attentive, friendly, and made sure we had the best experience throughout the day. He took us to some amazing photo spots and also recommended an excellent restaurant for lunch, which we really enjoyed. We had an incredible day and couldn’t have asked for a better guide.
