Kyoto Night Tour: Samurai, Secrets and Gion Dark History by Local Operator
Full description
This is a 3-hour experience from Kyoto, built around Yasaka Shrine, Gion and Hanamikoji Street. It is run by MARKEVISION株式会社, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.
Gion is Kyoto's historic entertainment district, the streets of wooden machiya houses around Hanamikoji where the geiko and maiko of the Gion Kobu district still work. They are working professionals on their way to engagements, not performers for the street, and Kyoto has banned photography in the private lanes; an evening walk with a guide who explains the ochaya system is the respectful way to see it. Tea ceremony sessions in Gion teach the basic form of matcha preparation in an hour. Kimono rental for a day, with dressing and hair, is an established business around the district and is welcomed rather than resented.
The price covers guide. It does not cover Food and beverages, Transportation costs, Admission fees not specified in the "Included" section and Hotel pick-up and drop-off, so budget for those separately. Everything included is listed in full on this page; if something is not on that list, assume it is not in the price.
MARKEVISION株式会社 sends the meeting point and time by email as soon as the booking is confirmed. We need at least one day's notice, and we confirm the date with MARKEVISION株式会社 before treating your booking as final. If they cannot take your date we tell you and refund you rather than leave you waiting.

Traveler Reviews
Thank you for taking us on a stroll to see Gion at night, the merging of old and new was very interesting. Friendly guide!
the tour was eexcellent, interesting and plenty of curiosityes about the city. Out guide, Kazumasa, tell us a lot histories and were astonished during the full tour.
The guide was good but there were some problems. Tour started at Kyoto station were we right away took a local bus to Gion. That felt unnecessary since we just could have met in Gion. Also it is definitely more of a samurai tour than a "dark history" tour. Would probably be better if it was just called that.
I joined this tour to make the most of my time in Kyoto at night. I had participated in other tours in Kyoto before, but this one was just as fantastic and left me thoroughly satisfied. I especially loved being able to explore the city while learning about its history.
