This is a 45-minute experience in Kyoto. It is run by Kangetsu Kyoto, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.
Kyoto was Japan's capital for over a thousand years until 1868 and has 17 UNESCO-listed sites among some 2,000 temples and shrines. The big three are Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion, covered in gold leaf and best in morning light; Kiyomizu-dera, the wooden stage on the eastern hills with the Higashiyama lanes of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka below it; and Fushimi Inari's gates. Nijo Castle has the nightingale floors that squeak against intruders, and Ryoan-ji the rock garden. Temples open around 8:00 or 9:00 and close at 17:00, and the city bus is slow; a day with a driver or a guide who orders the stops against the crowds is the difference between four sights and seven.

Mana-san and Yoko-san were so welcoming, friendly and patient! It was fascinating to learn a brief bit about the history of calligraphy, because it is woy incredibly varied and special. And concentrate! it's not as easy as it looks. Yoko-san and Mana-san also sell some incredibly cheap calligraphy supplies for you to take home and keep going. Mana-san even sold me his last traditional ink stone that is hard to get, because I cannot take that much liquid with me where I travel. I am deeply touched and thankful for this experience. Arigato gozaimas!!

This was an amazing experience that we really enjoyed. The class was small which gave us lots of opportunities to ask questions questions. The Master and his assistant showed us numerous techniques and guided us through the process. I would highly recommend this experience.

An unforgettable experience. After a short introduction into the three japanese writing systems - hiragana, katakana, and kanji - each of us chose one kanji character which we wanted to write at the end of the lesson. Then we started practising. We started with simple dots and went on to different techniques for strokes and sweeps. And it's actually really hard, but also so much fun to practice! Our teachers guided us so well and explained and showed every technique patiently - multiple times if necessary. Then we practised our chosen kanji, 2 or 3 times on paper. This was a very pleasant, engaged, relaxing, and friendly calligraphy (shodo) class. Sakura and her friendly assistant were both knowledgeable, kind, and encouraging. It was an intimate room, emphasizing focus and being present. We chose a kanji or two, and practiced the strokes until we completed one final kanji to take home. This was so pleasant and I’m very grateful for their expertise and art.
This was a fun and easy to follow activity and now I have a reminder of my time in Japan.
