This is a 45-minute experience in Kyoto. It is run by Kangetsu Kyoto, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.

Gion is Kyoto's historic entertainment district, the streets of wooden machiya houses around Hanamikoji where the geiko and maiko of the Gion Kobu district still work. They are working professionals on their way to engagements, not performers for the street, and Kyoto has banned photography in the private lanes; an evening walk with a guide who explains the ochaya system is the respectful way to see it. Tea ceremony sessions in Gion teach the basic form of matcha preparation in an hour. Kimono rental for a day, with dressing and hair, is an established business around the district and is welcomed rather than resented.

We absolutely loved this and would totally sign up for it again!!! We wanted to have an experience that was not only authentic but also educational and I felt we got that and more. Our team masters gave us historical and cultural context for different aspects of the tea ceremony, and even described differences in approaches between different schools of tea masters. The ceremony itself was beautiful and captivating to watch, and I enjoyed that we got to participate as well with guidance throughout. There's also an option to wear kimono during the ceremony which also is a neat experience to feel

My experience was excellent... very informative, and easy to understand. I learned a lot about the reasons for the tea ceremony, the history and background. I learned a lot about the symbols and the concepts behind the ceremony... about Wabi Sabi. The whole experience was lovely. I would highly recommend this wonderful tea ceremony to anyone looking for a meditative, deep and refreshing experience.
