Full description

There is a point in most Kyoto trips, usually around day three, when the temples stop registering. You have walked eight kilometres a day through crowds, everything is beautiful, and none of it is landing any more.

This exists for that point. It is a private sound bath in a tatami room five minutes from Kyoto Station, capped at two or three people, and you spend most of it lying down with your eyes closed.

What makes it distinct from the sound baths found in every Western city is the instrument. Singing Rings are handmade Japanese instruments, not Tibetan or crystal bowls, and their resonance is different — longer, cleaner, and physically felt rather than only heard when you are close to them. Whether you find that meaningful or simply pleasant is a matter of temperament, but the effect on a tired body is not in dispute.

A hands-on section lets you play the instruments yourself, which is a better souvenir of the hour than a photograph.

Two formats: a private space, or a version held in a tea ceremony room, which is worth the small difference for the setting alone.

What this is not: it is not a temple visit, a massage or a meditation class with instruction. It is ninety minutes of deliberate stillness in a city that offers very little of it, and it is best booked in the middle of a trip rather than at the start.

Instruction is in English, the group is your own party, and the venue is a five-minute walk from Kyoto Station — which means you can do it before a train.

New experience for both my husband and I. Thoroughly enjoyed it and funnily enough bought out some aches and pains. Felt very refreshed afterwards. Great experience

This is a very unique experience. I've never experienced anything like this before - be it in Japan or elsewhere. The experience was able to induce a profound relaxation in me which was probably the deepest state of relaxation I had experienced. Highly recommended.

Junichiro’s Singing Ring session brought me into a deep state of relaxation and inner calm. The sound gently resonated through the body, creating a very peaceful experience. He also explains everything clearly in English, which made the session easy to follow and very comfortable. When I return to Kyoto, I will definitely come back for another session. Thank you very much, Sensei.

This was the activity that surprised me the most. I went in not knowing what to expect and came out more relaxed and peaceful than I remember being in years. It was the fastest hour of my life. We loved it so much we ended up booking another session for the next day. I don’t know exactly how the bowls make those tones, but they do something to you that is very healing. Wish we had something like this at home.

Late March to early April for cherry blossom, or mid-to-late November for peak autumn foliage. Kyoto sits in a basin and runs hotter in summer and colder in winter than Tokyo, even at a similar latitude. Full month-by-month figures are in our best time to visit Kyoto guide.
Kyoto never built an extensive subway — just two lines (Karasuma and Tozai) — so the city bus network does most of the work, especially for Higashiyama, Kinkaku-ji and Ginkakuji. Fushimi Inari and Arashiyama are best reached by JR rail instead. See getting around Kyoto.
Three days covers the essentials well: a day for Higashiyama and Gion, a day for Arashiyama and Kinkaku-ji, and a day for Fushimi Inari plus a Nara or Uji day trip. Our 3-day Kyoto itinerary has the full route with timing.
Arrive by 6:30-7am — the shrine is open 24/7 and free, and most visitors only walk the first 20-30 minutes anyway. Past that point the crowds thin out fast. Full hike details in our Fushimi Inari guide.
Yes — it's a public path with no entrance fee and no set hours. The trade-off is that it gets shoulder-to-shoulder by mid-morning; arrive before 8am for a nearly empty walk. See the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest guide.
Kyoto restricts photography on certain private alleys in Gion after complaints about tourists chasing and blocking geiko and maiko, with fines for violators. Public streets like Hanamikoji-dori remain open, but never chase, touch or block a real geiko/maiko anywhere. Full etiquette in our Gion geisha district guide.
Yudofu (simmered tofu, best near Nanzen-ji or Arashiyama), kaiseki and shojin ryori temple cuisine, and Nishiki Market's stalls of tako tamago and fresh yuba. Uji, just south of the city, is one of Japan's top matcha-growing regions. See the Kyoto food guide.
