Full description

This is a 2-hour experience in Kyoto. It is run by Kyoto Kimono Rental Yumeyakata, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.

Gion is Kyoto's historic entertainment district, the streets of wooden machiya houses around Hanamikoji where the geiko and maiko of the Gion Kobu district still work. They are working professionals on their way to engagements, not performers for the street, and Kyoto has banned photography in the private lanes; an evening walk with a guide who explains the ochaya system is the respectful way to see it. Tea ceremony sessions in Gion teach the basic form of matcha preparation in an hour. Kimono rental for a day, with dressing and hair, is an established business around the district and is welcomed rather than resented.

The price covers Casual kimono rental, photoshoot, Women's hairstyling, Women's makeup and Hair accessory. It does not cover Transportation between Gojo Shop and the traditional, Transportation between Gojo Shop and Higashiyama if the, Decoration items on kimono and Customized hairstyling, so budget for those separately. Everything included is listed in full on this page; if something is not on that list, assume it is not in the price.

Kyoto Kimono Rental Yumeyakata sends the meeting point and time by email as soon as the booking is confirmed. We need at least one day's notice, and we confirm the date with Kyoto Kimono Rental Yumeyakata before treating your booking as final. If they cannot take your date we tell you and refund you rather than leave you waiting.

Great and prompt service, the ladies who helped us dress were really lovely, and the cameraman was super friendly. For anyone on a budget, price of the taxi to the location is not included. Recommended overall, but be careful in the summer!

Incredible service from choosing the Kimono to using the makeup and hairstyling service. Everything is communicated clearly, with an amazing understanding of the specific style you're looking for in the photoshoot. I would highly recommend this service to anyone who wants a special memory in Kyoto and curated photos from their trip in this beautiful city. EVERYTHING IS 10/10. The only issue is that if you want to optimize all the time you have for the photoshoot, come to the store as early as possible for your appointment.

We had such a lovely experience with our family photoshoot. Our photographer was incredibly friendly and professional, and she made us feel comfortable and relaxed throughout the session. Everything went so smoothly, from the kimono rental to getting to the photoshoot location. We chose the old traditional house for the photoshoot, which turned out to be a great choice, especially as it gave us a lovely place to escape the heat! The photos are beautiful and will definitely be one of the best souvenirs we bring home from our trip. We were also really impressed with how quickly we received the p

I would like to say that our photographer was incredible! Kind, talented, patient and so detail oriented. My dad is disabled and it was very difficult for all the staff to assist him, but everyone was so helpful and patient. It truly made our trip to Japan very memorable! We loved our hair dresser too! We absolutely loved this experience!

Very good service, photographer concerned rainy weather, he gives one suggestion for my alternative choice. Generally, all staffs are very professional from selected/dress up kimono to photography.

Overall the kimono experience was wonderful!! Kimonos were beautiful, albeit very tight and you cannot even bend to tie your shoes. The Japanese shoes they provide are super slippery and uncomfortable 😫 My suggestion: bring your own comfortable shoes to walk in, then wear the Japanese shoes only for pictures. Transportation was in a taxi that I paid for. Our photographer was nice and accommodating on a super hot day. We paid extra to be part of a traditional tea ceremony the same day, wearing our kimonos, on the same building (upstairs), In an air-conditioned room and it was a fabulous way to

Loved every minute and the photos are amazing! Everything about this experience was beautiful, the attention to detail, all the kimonos to choose from, the women helping us and making our hair. The photographer was fun and nice to talk to and had great ideas for photospots. And the pictures are amazing. Thank you for a wonderful experience.

Lu was an incredible photographer! So sweet and she was helpful with posing and found great spots. The kimono selection was small for each specific size but we both found ones we liked. Overall an amazing experience!

Late March to early April for cherry blossom, or mid-to-late November for peak autumn foliage. Kyoto sits in a basin and runs hotter in summer and colder in winter than Tokyo, even at a similar latitude. Full month-by-month figures are in our best time to visit Kyoto guide.
Kyoto never built an extensive subway — just two lines (Karasuma and Tozai) — so the city bus network does most of the work, especially for Higashiyama, Kinkaku-ji and Ginkakuji. Fushimi Inari and Arashiyama are best reached by JR rail instead. See getting around Kyoto.
Three days covers the essentials well: a day for Higashiyama and Gion, a day for Arashiyama and Kinkaku-ji, and a day for Fushimi Inari plus a Nara or Uji day trip. Our 3-day Kyoto itinerary has the full route with timing.
Arrive by 6:30-7am — the shrine is open 24/7 and free, and most visitors only walk the first 20-30 minutes anyway. Past that point the crowds thin out fast. Full hike details in our Fushimi Inari guide.
Yes — it's a public path with no entrance fee and no set hours. The trade-off is that it gets shoulder-to-shoulder by mid-morning; arrive before 8am for a nearly empty walk. See the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest guide.
Kyoto restricts photography on certain private alleys in Gion after complaints about tourists chasing and blocking geiko and maiko, with fines for violators. Public streets like Hanamikoji-dori remain open, but never chase, touch or block a real geiko/maiko anywhere. Full etiquette in our Gion geisha district guide.
Yudofu (simmered tofu, best near Nanzen-ji or Arashiyama), kaiseki and shojin ryori temple cuisine, and Nishiki Market's stalls of tako tamago and fresh yuba. Uji, just south of the city, is one of Japan's top matcha-growing regions. See the Kyoto food guide.
