Farming and fishing families in cold, cotton-scarce regions of Japan used running stitches in white thread on indigo cloth to reinforce and patch worn fabric, and over generations the repair work became an art form in its own right - geometric patterns like hemp leaf and interlocking waves, each with its own name and history. This workshop sits inside a small studio in Kyoto's arts district, run by people who clearly stitch for a living, not just for demonstrations. You'll learn the basic running stitch technique on real sashiko cloth, work through one of the traditional geometric patterns at your own pace, and leave with a finished piece you actually made. A wonderful workshop! Jun-san is an excellent teacher—very helpful and knowledgeable. I really appreciated the historical introduction and the technical aspects, which the instructor explained masterfully. The discussion of fibers and materials, as well as the dyeing of the threads used in the sashiko technique, was absolutely fascinating. The icing on the cake was the collection of items Mr. Jun showed us, which allowed us to observe the vast expressive potential of sashiko in both historical and modern contexts! Equally important was the opportunity to purchase kits and materials so we could continue exploring this craft once we returned home.

The Sashiko Stitching class was a great small group setting. We about the history of the stitching and how it developed. We were given detailed instructions and lots of support along the way. You do not have to have knowledge of sewing to take the class. They will teach everything and are very patient. It was a relaxed chill atmosphere and great to learn about a traditional Japanese craft. I would highly recommend.

This Sashiko workshop exceeded all expectations. Jun and his assistant were so friendly, knowledgeable and professional. A lot of workshops are dumbed down due to lack of time or skills needed to complete a project. However, this workshop was 100% hands-on and I actually learned a skill from beginning to end. As a bonus. Jun and his assistant were great conversationalists, and we had a lot of fun chatting and sharing experiences while we stitched away. I highly recommend this workshop for anyone interested in adding a new skill to their craft repertoire. I can’t wait to start a new Sashiko project.
