Full description

This sits in the middle of Kyoto's covered shopping arcades, five floors up off Shinkyogoku, which is not where anyone expects to find a sumo ring. But there is a real dohyo in the centre of the room, and the tables are arranged around it, so you eat at ringside rather than watching from a distance.

The evening opens with a geisha performing a traditional dance in full kimono. In Kyoto specifically this carries weight — the city's geiko districts are notoriously difficult to enter, and seeing the dance at close range without a teahouse introduction is a rare thing for a visitor.

The sumo follows, narrated in English throughout. The venue is straightforward about what it is: not a tournament and not a training session, but an entertainment show built to bring sumo culture close. What that means in practice is that the wrestlers explain as they go — the rituals, the winning techniques, the etiquette — and then fight, a few metres from your table. Guests can step into the ring and take on a wrestler afterwards, with places drawn by lottery when demand is high.

The food is the other half. Chanko-nabe, the hot pot that sumo stables live on, served all-you-can-eat alongside a wide spread of other dishes — and all-you-can-drink, which is unusual at this price and changes the character of the evening considerably. A souvenir gift set comes with it.

Two seating tiers: standard, or VIP front row at the edge of the dohyo. The venue is on the fifth floor of the building with Animate on Shinkyogoku, in the Takoyakushi arcade, and it is wheelchair accessible.

What a night!! This was so much fun from the beginning to the end ! Geisha dance at the beginning was pretty and sumos were impressive and funny. The food and drinks were good and we appreciated the unlimited re-order. I really recommend the show!

I was skeptical at first but still wanted to try it... and it was definitely worth it! Everyone was so nice and helping and you got more than enough to eat and drink, and they were fast! The show was interactive and fun. Just try it))

Great show and performance! Both Geisha and Sumo show were amazing and super fun :) at first some parts looked a bit cringy, but this is a style and you should just relax and allow yourself a good laugh once in a while! Just remind yourself about those viral videos of weird Japanese TV shows - this show had similar wibes. Food was 4/5

My family had so much fun! I came with my senior parents and 3 boys that are around middle school age. The announcer did a great job explaining sumo rules/techniques, and the wrestlers were very entertaining. The food was great too!
