Gion is Kyoto's historic entertainment district, the streets of wooden machiya houses around Hanamikoji where the geiko and maiko of the Gion Kobu district still work. They are working professionals on their way to engagements, not performers for the street, and Kyoto has banned photography in the private lanes; an evening walk with a guide who explains the ochaya system is the respectful way to see it. Tea ceremony sessions in Gion teach the basic form of matcha preparation in an hour. A lovely experience overall, the resort venue for the meal and performance was delightful and worth a visit by itself. Such an intimate atmosphere with the trainee geisha performing a few dances to recorded music, and an opportunity to have a Q&A and photos taken with her afterwards. A quality souvenir shop and illuminated gardens were appreciated and then finally the bus drove us to a viewpoint overlooking Kyoto lit up at night for a photo stop. I would recommend this experience as very memorable and incidentally also very good value for the quality of the evening.
