This is a 3-hour experience from Kyoto, built around Gion, Nishiki-Tenmangu Shrine and Nishiki Market. It is run by Travel Japan Together, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.

Japanese food tours work because the best places are small, unmarked and full of regulars, and a guide who orders for you opens them. An izakaya crawl covers yakitori, sashimi, karaage and the local pours of sake, shochu and highballs across three or four counters in an evening; a ramen walk explains the broths, tonkotsu, shoyu, miso and shio, and the regional styles. Most places seat eight to twelve and tours run six to eight guests for that reason. Vegetarians should say so when booking, because dashi stock is fish and hidden in almost everything; halal-certified options exist but are fewer.

Saki was such a lovely guide. She took me to some excellent places in Nishiki Market and was so helpful in explaining the etiquette of walking in the street, visiting the shrines and eating in public. I tasted food I wouldn’t normally choose and it was all delicious, especially the tempura and mochi. She even helped me to find some knife shops for my own food preparation at home. Highly recommended.
