Full description
This is a 1-hour experience in Kyoto. It is run by 株式会社琥珀, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.
Kyoto was Japan's capital for over a thousand years until 1868 and has 17 UNESCO-listed sites among some 2,000 temples and shrines. The big three are Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion, covered in gold leaf and best in morning light; Kiyomizu-dera, the wooden stage on the eastern hills with the Higashiyama lanes of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka below it; and Fushimi Inari's gates. Nijo Castle has the nightingale floors that squeak against intruders, and Ryoan-ji the rock garden. Temples open around 8:00 or 9:00 and close at 17:00, and the city bus is slow; a day with a driver or a guide who orders the stops against the crowds is the difference between four sights and seven.
The price covers Private cruise on a traditional Japanese yakatabune boat, Live shamisen music performance, Traditional Japanese games and Cultural insights from a former maiko. Everything included is listed in full on this page; if something is not on that list, assume it is not in the price.
嵐山通船 南乗り場 (屋形船・貸ボート). We need at least one day's notice, and we confirm the date with 株式会社琥珀 before treating your booking as final. If they cannot take your date we tell you and refund you rather than leave you waiting.

The perfect introduction to Kyoto—unforgettable! If you are visiting Kyoto, this private boat tour is a absolute must-do. The guiding is exceptional; the deep knowledge of Japanese history and culture shared during the tour sets a wonderful foundation for your entire trip. Floating along the stunning, tree-lined river while enjoying a live shamisen performance felt incredibly exclusive and authentic. Between the fascinating historical insights, the fun traditional games, and the beautiful temple scenery, it was a flawless experience. Highly, highly recommend!
Having a private boat tour in Kyoto is worth the cost alone, and having a former maiko as guide makes it even better!! This boat tour is a must-do in Kyoto—Kohaku shared so much information about the area and culture, and the shamisen playing was gorgeous while floating down the river. This ride is the highlight of my trip!
We had an incredible experience on the boat tour with the ex-maiko. She was so warm, kind, and welcoming, especially with the children. She sings and plays beautifully, and the games she includes are fun and engaging for everyone. What made the experience even more special was how she shared stories and explained the world of geishas and maikos in such an interesting and approachable way. She is truly lovely, gracious, and makes everyone feel comfortable. The gentleman operating the boat was also very friendly and attentive, which added to the relaxing atmosphere. This is definitely an experie
Kohaku was wonderful. The scenery was beautifully paired with the music from the shamisen. Loved listening to her historical stories and embracing Kyoto culture

This was one of our favorite activities! We had a lovely time. Our guide was so flexible and wonderful. She played music for us and told us about the Geiko/Maiko differences. It was fascinating. The scenery is so lovely and we enjoyed it so much.
Amazing activity, definitely a highlight of our trip! 10-10 would do it again.
Loved it - highly recommend for couples or families
This tour was truly the highlight of our entire trip to Japan! Even though we were a bit early for cherry blossom season, the scenery along the river was still incredibly picturesque and beautiful. Our host was warm and welcoming, which made the experience even more enjoyable. The time flew by—we didn’t even notice how the hour passed as we were completely immersed in the traditional games and the mesmerizing shamisen performance by the Maiko. We booked this experience to celebrate a birthday, and it exceeded our expectations in every way. Even traveling with a 3-year-old, everything went smoo
I would highly recommend this activity to everyone who is visiting Kyoto
