Full description
This is a 1.5-hour experience in Kyoto. It is run by B.B.Advisors Inc. AN KYOTO, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.
Gion is Kyoto's historic entertainment district, the streets of wooden machiya houses around Hanamikoji where the geiko and maiko of the Gion Kobu district still work. They are working professionals on their way to engagements, not performers for the street, and Kyoto has banned photography in the private lanes; an evening walk with a guide who explains the ochaya system is the respectful way to see it. Tea ceremony sessions in Gion teach the basic form of matcha preparation in an hour. Kimono rental for a day, with dressing and hair, is an established business around the district and is welcomed rather than resented.

Traveler Reviews
The best part was being able to ask questions. We had already done a tea ceremony so that's why we went for the 'simple activity' . The tables covered in red cloth should've been moved to allow a clear view of the meiko dancing, or participants invited to be in front of the tables as they interfered with viewing. The games part was really good fun. I would recommend this activity.
Fabulous - we were upgraded to meeting with a Geiko. She was delightful. Very well organised and also catered for english speakers. My second event with this provider - wonderful.
Loved this chance to do Q&A and watch performances by a maiko. She was truly lovely! The host provided English and Japanese translation. We went during the off season (early March) so it wasn't crowded at all, in fact there were only 8 of us. I learned a lot from this experience!
Really good opportunity to have some time with a maiko, without hitting the bank. Suggested!
it felt very informal and was interesting to be able to have the questions and answers. was well organised and run. I would recommend this activity.
È sembrato di entrare e essere in una sala per le riunioni, spoglia, con tavoli che sembravano banchi scolastici, tutto improntato sul farti spendere soldi per il bere e il mangiare.
Best activity to really understand the Mailo and Geiko culture up close
it was lovely meeting a maiko, watching her performance and playing the game, and asking her questions . But it was a bit disappointing for the money we paid, we sat in back row and not offered anything unless you wanted to pay. The description needs to be made clearer, But I think for the cost you should at least get a small cup of tea and just a little sweet- so you don't feel so left out. I would think there might be better tea ceremony experiences than this one. Not what I was expecting
It was very interesting. The maiko was kind and gentle and patiently answered questions. The translator/host was animated and ensured everyone felt included. A few challenges- the room arrangement made it difficult for people in the back to see the performances. It was also not very clear that this plan did not include participating in the tea ceremony.
