Full description
This is a 1.5-hour experience in Kyoto. It is run by atelier SUSHI, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.
Tokyo's wholesale fish market moved from Tsukiji to Toyosu in 2018, but the Tsukiji Outer Market, the lanes of shops and stalls around the old site, stayed and is where the food walks go: tamagoyaki on a stick, tuna cuts, uni, grilled scallops and knife shops, busiest from about 8:00 to 11:00 and closed on Sundays and some Wednesdays. The tuna auction itself is at Toyosu, watched from a viewing deck before 6:30 with an advance lottery. Sushi classes teach shari, the vinegared rice, and the hand pressure of nigiri; most run two to three hours and you eat what you make.
The price covers Sushi making workshop with English speaking host, Sushi you made yourself for your lunch/dinner, Miso soup, Gift bag and Disposable gloves and apron. It does not cover Hotel pickup and drop-off, so budget for those separately. Everything included is listed in full on this page; if something is not on that list, assume it is not in the price.
atelier SUSHI sends the meeting point and time by email as soon as the booking is confirmed. We need at least one day's notice, and we confirm the date with atelier SUSHI before treating your booking as final. If they cannot take your date we tell you and refund you rather than leave you waiting.

The sushi making class was very fun. My daughter and I had a great time learning how to make nigiri and maki. At the end we got to eat everything and it was very delicious and a lot of food. Also they were able to accommodate my daughter’s gluten allergy and offer substitutions for what the group was making.
We really enjoyed learning how to make sushi! Both Ayumi and Aya were very friendly and patient - they are great teachers!
I had an absolutely amazing time at this sushi-making class! The explanations were very clear and easy to follow, making the whole experience both fun and enjoyable. The two instructors were incredibly kind, patient, and attentive throughout the class. They made everyone feel welcome and created such a friendly atmosphere. I highly recommend this experience to anyone looking for a fun and authentic activity. I truly had a wonderful time, and to top it all off, the sushi we made were absolutely delicious! Thank you so much for such a memorable experience!
This was truly one of the most beautiful and memorable experiences of our trip to Kyoto. The sushi-making workshop at Atelier SUSHI exceeded all expectations. From the very first moment, we felt incredibly welcome. The atmosphere was warm, personal, and authentic – you can really feel that this is a family-run place built with passion and love. The instructors were not only highly skilled but also so kind, patient, and attentive. Kana explained everything in a way that was easy to understand, even for beginners, and made sure everyone felt comfortable and involved. What made this experience ev
Warm welcoming by the hosts. A very enjoyable activity in a quiet place. Hosts are very generous of their time and sharing of Japanese culture. Thank you Kana and husband for this lovely time.
Thank you to Kana and Kerim for this beautiful moment together learning how to make sushi with our family. You were the perfect hosts and we really enjoyed this experience. Highly recommend!!
We really enjoyed our sushi making workshop. The group size was small (a total of two families) and there was so much assistance that our 9 year old is now a confident sushi chef (and has made sushi at home). The workshop was well planned with enough help that everyone, adults included, had a sense of achievement at the end! Highly recommend this!
Kana and her husband were wonderful. The course was very fun and Kana was encouraging all throughout the process while also answering any questions we had about japanese culture. She and her husband made a real effort to connect with everyone and they even gave us recommendations about where to go and what to do. The ingredients were fresh and of high quality. The experience enlightened our day. We would highly recommend this activity to anyone visiting Kyōto.
We had a truly wonderful time with our instructor Ayumi and the team at Atelier SUSHI, who taught us how to make nigiri and maki by hand in their lovely Kyoto kitchen. It was the highlight of our trip to Japan. The rice and fish were just delicious. The team were warm and welcoming, spent time to make us feel at home, and answered every question we had about sushi, the culture, Kyoto, and Japan. We even got some great tips on tourist spots which avoid the crowds and good quality Japanese knives to buy as souveniers without breaking the bank. A truly great experience and highly recommended to a
