Full description
This is a 1.5-hour experience in Kyoto. It is run by Malligraphy Kyoto, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.
Kyoto was Japan's capital for over a thousand years until 1868 and has 17 UNESCO-listed sites among some 2,000 temples and shrines. The big three are Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion, covered in gold leaf and best in morning light; Kiyomizu-dera, the wooden stage on the eastern hills with the Higashiyama lanes of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka below it; and Fushimi Inari's gates. Nijo Castle has the nightingale floors that squeak against intruders, and Ryoan-ji the rock garden. Temples open around 8:00 or 9:00 and close at 17:00, and the city bus is slow; a day with a driver or a guide who orders the stops against the crowds is the difference between four sights and seven.

Excellent event. I now have a stamp that describes my martial arts hobby. The location was difficult to find and directions could benefit from a couple of photos showing the byilding.
Marin was an amazing guide and I had the best time designing my stamp! Turned out beautifully.
It was exceptional! Very highly recommended! A lot of fun and the most authentic souvenir to the trip! Thank you, Marin!
Marin was a kind and patient instructor. My hanko stamp turned out great and the calligraphy page was a nice added bonus. I gained a deeper understanding of Japanese culture from this activity.
Marin-san was amazing guide - she made me feel welcomed and introduced me to the stone seal carving step by step. We started with history and theory, then moved to carving itself. Marin-san helped me to find old versions of kanji that perfectly suited my needs. As a person who had no prior experience, I fully recommend this activity.
TL;DR: A fantastic experience that I would happily recommend to anyone. I rarely write reviews, but this experience absolutely deserves one. Marin, our guide, was incredibly patient and helpful throughout the entire process. The activity took place in a stunning traditional building, and the atmosphere alone made it worthwhile. As a family of four, each of us came away with a beautiful, handmade memento of our trip to Japan — something meaningful that we will keep and use for years to come. Marin was especially wonderful with our youngest, a rather stubborn 9-year-old who can get discouraged e
A lot of fun, despite how intimidating it seemed at the beginning. The instructors were patient and encouraging and got us all through to success!
This was a lot of fun. Hard work but it came out great. Highly recommended to others.
We had a great experience, everything was explained very clearly and we also got help to properly translate our name and surname. It is possible to choose the kanji style to your preference. The final results were amazing! I would totally recommend it, a very calming and soothing experience
Marin did a phenomenal job with walking us through the calligraphy and stone carving. We were worried about this being a very touristy activity that would take us away from the city, but we are leaving with fond memories and one of the best mementos of our trip. Marin is an ex-school teacher and you can tell with her patience and teaching abilities. Definitely do this.
I loved the environment, care of the staff and personal touch. I had chosen not a word but a sentence. They said it would be hard to do but loved the challenge too! They granted me support, time and attention to finish it and helped me getting there. Leaving satisfied after the couple of focus hours that it took to craft my sealstone, a lasting memory!
A lovely relaxing activity to take a break from the chaos of being a tourist in Kyoto. Marin was patient, attentive and a great teacher. Thank you!
