Full description
This is a 50-minute experience in Kyoto. It is run by Kyoto Kimono Rental Yumeyakata, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.
Gion is Kyoto's historic entertainment district, the streets of wooden machiya houses around Hanamikoji where the geiko and maiko of the Gion Kobu district still work. They are working professionals on their way to engagements, not performers for the street, and Kyoto has banned photography in the private lanes; an evening walk with a guide who explains the ochaya system is the respectful way to see it. Tea ceremony sessions in Gion teach the basic form of matcha preparation in an hour. Kimono rental for a day, with dressing and hair, is an established business around the district and is welcomed rather than resented.
The price covers Tea ceremony experience in a traditional town house, Matcha tea, Traditional Japanese sweets, A leaflet explaining the tea ceremony and Tea master and interpreter. It does not cover photos/videos and Transportation between Gojo Shop and the traditional town, so budget for those separately. Everything included is listed in full on this page; if something is not on that list, assume it is not in the price.
Kyoto Kimono Rental Yumeyakata sends the meeting point and time by email as soon as the booking is confirmed. We need at least one day's notice, and we confirm the date with Kyoto Kimono Rental Yumeyakata before treating your booking as final. If they cannot take your date we tell you and refund you rather than leave you waiting.

Sonoko was vibrant and friendly and explained the ceremony well. It was informative and beautiful.
Amazing experience! We were lucky that we were the only two people attending the ceremony. The tea master explained the entire process of making tea and answered all of our questions. The ceremony itself was done completely quietly, as the tradition. It was almost meditative to watch all the careful moves as the tea was being prepared.
We enjoyed our time doing a traditional samurai tea ceremony. Everything was well planned out, we learned a lot and not only just about „making tea” but also a lot about the culture and general practices. Our instructor explained everything step by step and was more than willing to answer all our questions. If you have an hour to spare I highly recommend.
We had such a lovely private tea ceremony experience with my sister. Yasue and Sonoko were absolutely adorable and made us feel very welcome. They introduced us to the history, traditions and beautiful gestures behind the tea ceremony, making it a really special and authentic experience. Thank you so much to both of you for this wonderful moment! We hope to come back to Japan and have another session with you one day. 🍵🤍
Really traditional activity with local guide. The explanation and ceremony was super nice and appropriate for tourists without knowledge.
Very fun and educative experience. The Matcha tasted great.
