Gion is Kyoto's historic entertainment district, the streets of wooden machiya houses around Hanamikoji where the geiko and maiko of the Gion Kobu district still work. They are working professionals on their way to engagements, not performers for the street, and Kyoto has banned photography in the private lanes; an evening walk with a guide who explains the ochaya system is the respectful way to see it. Tea ceremony sessions in Gion teach the basic form of matcha preparation in an hour. Kimono rental for a day, with dressing and hair, is an established business around the district and is welcomed rather than resented.

What an amazing opportunity for us to meet Geiko-san (lucky us). She was super elegant and absolutely wonderful in teaching us how to make and have tea (delicately, might I add). She patiently answered all questions and played games with audience. we were also treated to a couple of performances and had a wonderful MC who spoke in English making it easy to communicate. Knowing that the Maiko and Geiko are only in Kyoto, this was a fabulous experience for us when there. a culture trip in Japan. Big thanks to the whole team. We were lucky to be hosted by a lovely Geiko, who was very nice, engaging, and a lot of fun. The experience was fantastic overall. If there’s one small suggestion, it would be to style the room in a more traditional Japanese way to match the atmosphere. Other than that, everything was wonderful.

My sister and I attended this activity in April. we thoroughly enjoyed the experience of meeting a Maiko and understanding more about this profession. The MC was very charming and guided us through the activity with respect and kindness. his English was excellent. The Maiko kindly answered all our questions. The tea ceremony, dance, song and game were beautifully performed. The game was great fun. I highly recommend this as a respectful way to meet a Maiko and understand more about this tradition in Japan.

It was very interesting. We got to make matcha, eat some sweets, watch a lovely Geiko dance and played games. Very interesting Q&A and overall a nice way to spend an evening

It was a wonderful show and such a lovely experience. A nice surprise was that we were able to see not only a Maiko, but also a Geiko. The atmosphere was amazing, the games were fun, and everything was very well organized. I highly recommend it!
