This is a 1-hour experience in Kyoto. It is run by Chazuna, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.
Kyoto was Japan's capital for over a thousand years until 1868 and has 17 UNESCO-listed sites among some 2,000 temples and shrines. The big three are Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion, covered in gold leaf and best in morning light; Kiyomizu-dera, the wooden stage on the eastern hills with the Higashiyama lanes of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka below it; and Fushimi Inari's gates. Nijo Castle has the nightingale floors that squeak against intruders, and Ryoan-ji the rock garden. Temples open around 8:00 or 9:00 and close at 17:00, and the city bus is slow; a day with a driver or a guide who orders the stops against the crowds is the difference between four sights and seven.

I think it’s a good experience as it’s not easy to have the grinding matcha powder experience in other places. Just that don’t expect they will teach you throughly on how to make the matcha (so you might make a bad taste one haha), but as an experience it’s nice. It includes a vanilla ice cream to go with matcha which is great. You can also visit the museum part next to the classroom.
We had so much fun grinding matcha with our lovely and informative guide Seina! Seina and the other two ladies were very helpful and enthusiastic. The ice cream addition was definitely worth it, and we enjoyed browsing the tea museum (which was both very interesting and interactive, including a fun photo booth at the end). we would highly recommend a day trip to Uji with this experience!
Hosts were very kind and polite. We got to learn about matcha, grind the tea leaves, and make the matcha. 100% recommend!
This was a great activity. We spent the day exploring Uji and did this as our mid-point break, which worked out great. The guides were super helpful and cheerful. The history and information on tea cultivation was really interesting. We did the session where you got to make both tea and ice cream - delicious. The museum, while small, is also jam packed with history. We left recharged and a bit smarter about the local history & culture.
I really liked the activity, and also loved the energy of our ‘sensei’. She was very nice and her English was impressive! The matcha experience itself was so interesting and the matcha very good.
My 18yo daughter & I explored Uji and had lunch before taking a 10min walk to the museum and match grinding experienc. The museum was small yet engaging and informative. The staff was lovely & the venue even had a small gift shop and cafe onsite. We bought a couple gifts at the gift shop & went through the museum before taking part in the matcha class. The staff was kind, attentive and helpful. Overall it was a fun, interactive class that helped us learn more about matcha! I would take it again if I were bringing someone new with me.
I liked it, but sometimes I just could listen very well, maybe a mic would work better.
The matcha grinding and preparation class was incredible! The teachers were so knowledgeable and kind, and it was amazing to learn more about how matcha is prepared, its cultural history, and where it comes from. The museum at the end was a great addition as well. Overall, such a wonderful experience and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in matcha and Japanese culture!
