Full description
This is a 1-hour experience in Kyoto. It is run by Japan Wonder Travel, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.
Gion is Kyoto's historic entertainment district, the streets of wooden machiya houses around Hanamikoji where the geiko and maiko of the Gion Kobu district still work. They are working professionals on their way to engagements, not performers for the street, and Kyoto has banned photography in the private lanes; an evening walk with a guide who explains the ochaya system is the respectful way to see it. Tea ceremony sessions in Gion teach the basic form of matcha preparation in an hour. Kimono rental for a day, with dressing and hair, is an established business around the district and is welcomed rather than resented.
The price covers Matcha drink with matcha powder from local tea farm, Guidance from a tea master on making matcha and its history, Simple matcha recipe to use at home and Japanese traditional sweets for tea ceremony selected by. Everything included is listed in full on this page; if something is not on that list, assume it is not in the price.

We had the best time during this activity. We were able to dress in the traditional japanese clothing and we had this for about an hour before going to the tea ceremony. Our teacher was lovely and very engaging and was a great experience overall. We then had another half hour/hour before the clothing needed to be returned so we had plenty of time for pictures etc which was amazing as other places don't let you rent for as long!
Absolutely loved this experience and would recommend to anyone. Our tea master was so lovely and we learnt how to make the perfect matcha and the history of tea ceremonies in Japan culture.
Amazing, the host showed us a properly tea ceremony, it was a very calm and pleasant activity. 100% recommended if you enjoy Japanese culture.
Very informative and fun session learning about the history of matcha and then having the chance to make it ourselves! Our tea master Yuko was so friendly!

Yuko explained everything so clearly and made the experience very interesting and enjoyable. She was also very friendly and welcoming. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who wants to learn more about Japanese tea ceremony and experience it firsthand.
Ruo was an amazing host. You can tell she is very passionate about the art and tradition of the tea ceremony. Highly recommend!
Yuko, our guide, was wonderful. She was knowledgeable and kind. She explained the origin of the ceremony as well as its philosophical underpinning. It was totally worth it, and it gave me a deeper understanding of Japan itself.
Excellent experience! We learned a lot about the history and the procedure. Host Akemi is very kind and communicated perfectly in English!
