It Is a War Memorial, Not an Ancient Temple
The five-storey pagoda in the photograph is the Chureito, and it is younger than most visitors assume — completed in 1963 as a peace memorial to the local war dead, part of the Arakurayama Sengen Park above Fujiyoshida.
It is not a centuries-old temple, and knowing that removes a small amount of the mystique and adds a different kind. The composition that made it famous — pagoda, cherry trees, Fuji behind — is a modern arrangement of a very old mountain, and it works because someone chose that hillside deliberately.
The shrine at the base, Arakura Fuji Sengen Jinja, is genuinely old and almost nobody stops there. It is worth two minutes on the way up.
