Kawaguchiko: The Base Town for Mount Fuji

The single most useful piece of Kawaguchiko planning: Mount Fuji is to the south of the lake. That means the north shore is where the views are, and where the reflection shot — Fuji mirrored in still water — is taken from.

Hotels and ryokan on the north shore price accordingly, and a lake-view room facing the right way is a meaningfully different stay from one that is technically 'in Kawaguchiko'. When booking, check which direction the room faces rather than trusting the word 'lake view'.

The reflection itself needs a still morning. Wind on the lake kills it, and the water is calmest around dawn. If the reflection is why you came, that is a sunrise plan, not an afternoon one.

Both are sold as 'the Mount Fuji trip' and they are not the same product.

Kawaguchiko is closer, and Fuji dominates the view — the mountain fills the sky rather than appearing over a ridge. It is the right base for Chureito Pagoda, Oshino Hakkai, the Fuji Five Lakes and the fifth-station road in season. It is a lake resort town: functional, spread out, built around the view.

Hakone is further from Fuji and sees it across Lake Ashi, weather permitting. What Hakone has instead is a much older onsen culture, the ropeway and volcanic valley at Owakudani, serious art museums, and a compact sightseeing loop you can do without a car.

The short version: Kawaguchiko for the mountain, Hakone for the experience. If you want both, they connect by bus in a couple of hours and doing one night in each is a common and sensible structure.

The Kachi Kachi ropeway climbs Mount Tenjo from the lakeshore for the standard elevated view of Fuji over the water. It is short, it is busy, and it delivers.

Oshino Hakkai, twenty minutes away, is a set of eight spring-fed ponds filled with snowmelt filtered through the mountain's lava for decades. The water is extraordinarily clear. It is also small and extremely popular, so early is the answer again.

Seasonally, the lake has set pieces worth timing for: shibazakura pink moss phlox in spring at the nearby Motosu site, lavender at Oishi Park in July, and momiji maple corridors in November lit at night. The Fuji Five Lakes area is unusually seasonal even by Japanese standards.

For quieter water, the western lakes — Saiko, Shojiko, Motosuko — are far less developed. Motosuko is the view printed on the ¥1,000 note.

The easiest approach from Tokyo is the direct highway bus from Shinjuku, roughly two hours, which drops at Kawaguchiko station. By rail it is a change at Otsuki onto the Fujikyu line, which is slower and more scenic.

Within the area, buses loop the lakes and are the practical way around without a car. Timetables thin out considerably in the evening.

One note on Aokigahara, the forest on the flank of Fuji near Saiko. It is a genuine geological and ecological site — a forest grown on a lava flow, with ice caves and root systems that cannot penetrate the rock — and it also carries a reputation that has drawn a certain kind of visitor. If you go, go on the marked trails with a guide who is there for the geology, and treat it as the memorial landscape it is for local people rather than as a curiosity.
