Full description

This is a half-day trip that starts in Kyoto, not in Nara. You meet at Tully's Coffee by Kyoto Avanti next to Kyoto Station, board a coach, and ride about an hour south to the older capital, which spares you working out train connections with luggage or a group. The tour is a one-way arrangement: it finishes at Kintetsu-Nara Station rather than returning to Kyoto, so you can head straight back on your own schedule or stay in Nara for the rest of the day.

The guided portion runs in an unusual order that avoids the mid-morning crowds. Kasuga Taisha comes first, a Shinto shrine founded in 768 CE whose paths and eaves carry thousands of stone and bronze lanterns given by worshippers over more than a millennium. Then comes free time in Nara Park among its thousand-plus wild sika deer, protected as messengers of the deity Takemikazuchi and designated a National Natural Treasure in 1957. Todai-ji is saved for last, with the longest guided block of the morning.

At Todai-ji you get close to the Daibutsu, the fifteen-metre bronze Buddha dedicated in 752 CE, during Nara's stint as Japan's first permanent capital, a role it held for 74 years from 710. The present Daibutsuden dates from 1709 and is only about two-thirds the width of the hall it replaced, which gives some idea of the scale of the original. A guide handles the context and the logistics; you handle the walking, which is moderate and mostly flat apart from the shrine approach.

Detailed Itinerary

Total time is about four hours door to drop-off, of which roughly 70 minutes is on the coach. Because the tour does not return to Kyoto, plan your own train back: Kintetsu-Nara Station is around 45 minutes from Kyoto and 35 to 40 minutes from Osaka. Arrive at the Tully's meeting point a few minutes early, as the coach departs on a fixed schedule.

Our Tour Guide Sakura was an excellent person who knows best on the Kasuga-Taisha, the Nara-Parc with the deers and about the Toudai-ji. My friend and I were in the third group and were asked about our doing in the afternoon and they gave us the information about the afternoon Byoudou-in temple and the Maccha experience which we spontaneously took. Sakura told us in the bus mostly everything about the temples and shrine and what we do and don't do or say and how to get away from being kicked by the deers. Our bus driver Hirose-san also was very kind. Certainly my friend who can speak Japanese spoke to Sakura and I just understand mostly everything they spoke about. So the Tour was one of our best in Japan. ❤️

Sakura was an amazing host, she was incredibly helpful and had a very charming personality. She kept us engaged the entire time, even on the bus rides between locations! Nara itself is absolutely beautiful, and the temple there was a lot more awe-inspiring than I could have imagined. Of course, everyone goes to Nara for the deer, and that did not disappoint either. They are literally everywhere and are so friendly! It is also very funny how they will follow you around in groups if you have anything to feed them. haha! Overall, it was a great tour, and I would highly recommend it. This was my favourite part of my trip to Japan!!
