Full description

This is a 10-hour experience in Nara, built around Nara Park, Tōdai-ji and Fushimi Inari Taisha. It is run by Japan Visionary Tour, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.

Kyoto was Japan's capital for over a thousand years until 1868 and has 17 UNESCO-listed sites among some 2,000 temples and shrines. The big three are Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion, covered in gold leaf and best in morning light; Kiyomizu-dera, the wooden stage on the eastern hills with the Higashiyama lanes of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka below it; and Fushimi Inari's gates. Nijo Castle has the nightingale floors that squeak against intruders, and Ryoan-ji the rock garden. Temples open around 8:00 or 9:00 and close at 17:00, and the city bus is slow; a day with a driver or a guide who orders the stops against the crowds is the difference between four sights and seven.

The price covers tour guide, Round-trip transportation by air-conditioned vehicle, Toll fees, Parking fees and Fuel fees. It does not cover Admission to Todaiji Temple & Byodoin Temple, Meals and beverages and Other personal expenses, so budget for those separately. Everything included is listed in full on this page; if something is not on that list, assume it is not in the price.

Japan Visionary Tour sends the meeting point and time by email as soon as the booking is confirmed. We need at least one day's notice, and we confirm the date with Japan Visionary Tour before treating your booking as final. If they cannot take your date we tell you and refund you rather than leave you waiting.

The locations we have visited are amazing with a lot to explore, I wish we had more time. We hope to come back on our own to fully enjoy the attractions. Definitely a good introductory tour.

Great tour! Perfect if you want to visit Nara and Uji without the hassle of planning. With convenient bus pick-up from both Osaka and Kyoto, you can bring your luggage along and even choose a different drop-off location. Excellent value for money! Our tour guide, Clytie, was incredibly kind and made the experience even more enjoyable—we had a fantastic time.

I liked our guide Mia, very knowledgeable about the places visited and gave very good local tips on where to shop. I would mention that maybe having more times at places like Uji would be better.

I recently had the pleasure of taking a tour from Osaka to Kyoto and Nara, and I can't recommend it enough! Lucy and Nat were exceptional guides, making the whole experience incredibly enjoyable. They were not only knowledgeable about the history and culture of the places we visited, but also incredibly friendly and approachable. Their enthusiasm and passion for the locations we explored made each stop feel special and memorable. From the vibrant streets of Osaka to the stunning temples and serene landscapes of Kyoto and Nara, every moment was filled with excitement and discovery. Lucy and Nat

Steve was great. Looked after us well and kept us entertained. Directions for where exactly to meet could have been more precise. The plaza where one was supposed to meet is a huge place. But it was all good. Steve did a great job of keeping in direct communication via a messaging apps (WhatsApp)

It was fun! Very informative and I appreciated that Hugo let us have free will of what we could visit. Informing us how we should take advantage of the day and what cool things to see. He wasn’t joking about the deer!!! They definitely are like little babies; don’t feed them and they’ll start to cry haha

We had a wonderful tour in Kyoto! Our guide, Michael, was an incredibly kind and helpful person. He did his best to make sure everything went smoothly, and even when a small issue came up, he helped fix it right away. Michael also shared some really tasty local snacks with us, which was such a thoughtful touch. Me and my friend had so much fun and truly enjoyed the experience. Definitely recommend this tour to anyone visiting Kyoto!

Late March to early April for cherry blossom, or mid-to-late November for peak autumn foliage. Kyoto sits in a basin and runs hotter in summer and colder in winter than Tokyo, even at a similar latitude. Full month-by-month figures are in our best time to visit Kyoto guide.
Kyoto never built an extensive subway — just two lines (Karasuma and Tozai) — so the city bus network does most of the work, especially for Higashiyama, Kinkaku-ji and Ginkakuji. Fushimi Inari and Arashiyama are best reached by JR rail instead. See getting around Kyoto.
Three days covers the essentials well: a day for Higashiyama and Gion, a day for Arashiyama and Kinkaku-ji, and a day for Fushimi Inari plus a Nara or Uji day trip. Our 3-day Kyoto itinerary has the full route with timing.
Arrive by 6:30-7am — the shrine is open 24/7 and free, and most visitors only walk the first 20-30 minutes anyway. Past that point the crowds thin out fast. Full hike details in our Fushimi Inari guide.
Yes — it's a public path with no entrance fee and no set hours. The trade-off is that it gets shoulder-to-shoulder by mid-morning; arrive before 8am for a nearly empty walk. See the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest guide.
Kyoto restricts photography on certain private alleys in Gion after complaints about tourists chasing and blocking geiko and maiko, with fines for violators. Public streets like Hanamikoji-dori remain open, but never chase, touch or block a real geiko/maiko anywhere. Full etiquette in our Gion geisha district guide.
Yudofu (simmered tofu, best near Nanzen-ji or Arashiyama), kaiseki and shojin ryori temple cuisine, and Nishiki Market's stalls of tako tamago and fresh yuba. Uji, just south of the city, is one of Japan's top matcha-growing regions. See the Kyoto food guide.
Late March to early April for cherry blossom in Nara Park, or mid-to-late November for autumn colour around Todai-ji — our pick for the best overall balance of weather and crowds. Full season breakdown in our best time to visit Nara guide.
Yes, generally — they're unusually tame from centuries of protected contact with visitors. Buy shika senbei crackers (~¥200) from a licensed vendor, and be extra cautious during October-December rutting season, when Nara city issues an annual warning about more assertive bucks. Full etiquette in our Nara deer park guide.
A 15-metre bronze Buddha cast in 752 CE, one of the largest bronze statues in the world, housed in the Daibutsuden — once the largest wooden building on Earth. History and what to look for inside is in our Todai-ji temple guide.
Both work well — about 45 minutes from Kyoto, 35-40 minutes from Osaka via Kintetsu. Train options and a realistic day schedule are in our Nara day trip guide.
A comfortable half day (about 4 hours) covers Nara Park, Todai-ji and the walk to Kasuga Taisha. Our Nara half-day itinerary breaks it down hour by hour.
