Be clear about what this is before you book: a twelve-hour day, of which roughly five hours are spent on trains. The itinerary leaves Minato City in Tokyo, runs to Tokyo Station, takes a shinkansen leg of about two and a quarter hours west, transfers onward to Nara, covers three major sites, and returns the same way in the evening. If you have a spare day in Tokyo and no other chance to reach the Kansai region, it works. If you are already spending nights in Kyoto or Osaka, a local departure will give you far more time on the ground.

What you get for the travel is a licensed English-speaking guide and a tight, well-chosen route. Nara Park comes first, forty minutes among the wild sika deer that have lived there for centuries under protection as messengers of the Shinto deity Takemikazuchi, a population formally designated a National Natural Treasure in 1957. A ten-minute walk brings you to Todai-ji Daibutsuden for a full hour. Nara was founded as Heijo-kyo in 710 CE and served as Japan's first permanent capital for 74 years; the bronze Daibutsu inside, about fifteen metres tall, was dedicated in 752 CE, and the hall around it was rebuilt in 1709 at two-thirds the original width yet is still one of the largest wooden buildings in the world.

The last stop is Fushimi Inari Taisha near Kyoto, forty minutes among the vermilion torii gates and the shops at the shrine's foot, before the return shinkansen from Kyoto Station. Expect an early start, a late finish and little slack in the schedule.
