Full description

This is a Kyoto-departing tour rather than a Nara-based one. You meet at Kintetsu Kyoto Station at 7:30 a.m. and travel south on the Aoniyoshi limited-express, reaching Nara while the park is still quiet. Travellers already staying in Nara can skip the train leg entirely and join the group at 8:40 a.m. beside the Monk Gyoki statue at Kintetsu Nara Station. The early start is the whole reasoning behind the itinerary: Nara's headline sites begin absorbing coach groups from mid-morning onward, and the first couple of hours are by far the calmest of the day.

Nara Park comes first, home to roughly 1,465 free-roaming sika deer. They are genuinely wild animals rather than a petting attraction, protected for centuries as messengers of the Shinto deity Takemikazuchi and designated a National Natural Treasure since 1957. Your guide shows you how to offer shika senbei crackers without being surrounded. The walk then continues to Kasuga Taisha, founded in 768 CE, whose approach paths and vermilion corridors are lined with thousands of stone and bronze lanterns donated by worshippers over more than a millennium.

The morning closes at Todai-ji. If the timing allows, the route detours uphill to Nigatsudo Hall, where the Omizutori fire ceremony is held each spring, before passing the 25-metre South Gate and entering the Daibutsuden. Entry to the Great Buddha Hall is included in the price, and inside sits the roughly 15-metre bronze Daibutsu first dedicated in 752 CE; the hall around it, rebuilt in 1709 at two-thirds of its original width, remains among the largest wooden buildings in the world. The group disbands at Kintetsu Nara Station around 12:30 p.m., leaving the afternoon free. Note that the operator runs this departure only from April through July and again in December.

Detailed Itinerary

Total time is about five hours door to door, most of it on foot between sites in and around Nara Park. Your basic train ticket between Kyoto and Nara is not covered, so carry an IC card or roughly USD 5 each way in cash. Entry to the Daibutsuden is prepaid for you; the other stops are outdoor and free to enter. The tour ends in Nara rather than back in Kyoto, so you are free to stay on for lunch and Naramachi.
