This is a 9-hour experience in Osaka. It is run by TOURSTORY Japan, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.

The day trips out of Osaka each have one reason. Himeji has Japan's finest surviving castle, the White Heron, an original of 1609 with six floors of wooden interior, its plaster re-whitened in a restoration completed in 2015; the climb to the top keep is steep and the queue at cherry-blossom time is long. Kobe has the beef, sold by grade at counters where you watch it cooked, and the harbour. Koyasan, two hours south, is the mountain monastery town founded by Kukai in 816, where 117 temples sit in a cedar forest and Okunoin cemetery is the largest in Japan; a night in a shukubo temple lodging with vegetarian shojin ryori is the reason to go.
