Over 1,200 semi-wild deer roam freely through Nara Park, considered messengers of the gods in local Shinto tradition. Deer crackers (shika senbei) are sold throughout the park for feeding them — bow to a deer and many will bow back before taking a cracker.
Todai-ji houses the Daibutsu, a bronze Great Buddha statue standing 15 meters tall — the largest of its kind in the world. It's about a 10-minute walk from the station to the park entrance, with more walking to reach Todai-ji itself.
