Full description

Miyama is the reason to take this day. It is a village in the mountains of northern Kyoto prefecture where around forty kayabuki farmhouses — thatched with reeds, roofs a metre thick and pitched steeply against the snow — still stand together in one place. Most of Japan's thatched villages are gone or preserved as open-air museums; Miyama is inhabited, the roofs are re-thatched on a rotation by people who still know how, and the effect in any season is of a landscape that stopped changing.

Katsuo-ji is stranger and more cheerful. It is a temple associated with victory and good fortune, and pilgrims have been leaving daruma dolls there for so long that the round red figures now cover every ledge, wall, step and tree root on the grounds — tens of thousands of them, staring. You buy one, make a wish, paint in one eye, and paint the second when the wish comes true.

Arashiyama closes the day: the bamboo grove and Nonomiya Shrine, the small shrine among the bamboo where imperial princesses once purified themselves before serving at Ise.

The coach handles the distances, which is the practical argument. Miyama in particular is genuinely difficult to reach on public transport and eats most of a day if you try.

Attraction entrance fees and meals are not included. Departures leave from Exit 2 of Nipponbashi Station in Osaka, and you can choose to be dropped in Kyoto at the end instead of returning — useful if you are moving on.

The price does not cover attraction entrance fees, meals, personal expenses and hotel pickup and drop-off. Everything it does cover is listed in full on this page, so if something is not on that list, budget for it separately.
Unless the option says private, this runs as a small group. The operator caps it rather than filling a coach, and if you want it to yourselves the private option is priced separately on this page.

Yes — Nara is about 30-45 minutes by Kintetsu train for the deer park and Todai-ji, and Kyoto is roughly 29 minutes by JR Special Rapid. Both are easy half-day or full-day trips. See our Osaka to Nara guide and Osaka to Kyoto guide.
Takoyaki (octopus balls) and okonomiyaki (savory pancake) are Osaka's signature street foods, best sampled around Dotonbori and Kuromon Market. See our Osaka food guide.
Yes — it's the city's neon-lit entertainment and food district, and while it's undeniably touristy, the energy, canal-side glow, and street food density make it genuinely worth an evening. See the Dotonbori guide.
Shinsekai is Osaka's retro, slightly gritty downtown district built around the Tsutenkaku Tower, known for kushikatsu (fried skewers). It's generally safe for tourists, especially in the daytime and early evening. See the Shinsekai guide.
