Ura-Namba Bar Crawl: Behind Dotonbori's Neon with a Local in Osaka

Dotonbori is the photograph. Ura-Namba is where people actually drink. It is the grid of narrow lanes immediately behind the neon, packed with counters that seat eight, standing bars with no seats at all, and kitchens that specialise in one thing and do nothing else — and almost none of it is legible if you cannot read the sign or the menu.

This three-hour crawl solves the door problem. A local guide takes a group of no more than fifteen through several venues, and the genuinely useful thing included is help ordering: reading the handwritten wall menus, knowing which of the eight things a particular kitchen does is the one to have, and handling the round-by-round rhythm that an izakaya expects.
