Full description

Osaka has been called the city of merchants, the city of food, the city of comedy, and the place where the Sengoku period finally ended. All four are true and they explain why the city feels different from Kyoto an hour away — less reverent, faster to talk to strangers, and far more interested in eating.

This walk covers the landmarks that make the argument. Osaka Castle first: the tower houses a museum on the castle's history and the Sengoku wars that ended beneath it, and the view from the top puts the whole city in one frame. Then Shitennoji, founded in 593, which is the oldest state-built Buddhist temple in Japan — older than anything in Kyoto, and a reminder that Osaka was the country's first international port and capital long before either.

Lunch is ramen at a busy local shop and it is included in the price rather than a stop where you fend for yourself.

The afternoon covers the modern city: Shinsekai with its Tsutenkaku tower and kushikatsu shops, and Dotonbori's canal and signage. Transport during the tour is included, which matters because these sites are genuinely spread out and the metro is the only sane way between them.

Groups cap at eight and the guide handles photographs, which is a small thing that visitors consistently appreciate.

Two entrance fees are payable separately on the day: Osaka Castle at 1,200 yen and Shitennoji at 500. A shorter four-hour version covers two of the five sites if the full day is more than you want. Meeting is at Exit 4 of Tanimachi 4-chome station, in front of the FamilyMart.

My guide - Mr. Toka-san is truly amazing and very patient. I arrived late due to my poor sense of directions, instead of rushing me, he calmly provided directions and waited. He has good knowledge of the places of interest, was very friendly and candid throughout the day. He is a gem and I believe he has shared insightful information. Thank you Mr. Toka-san!

Taka was an amazing guide. He was very knowledgeable about Osaka and its history, he was patient and was really great with our teenagers. It was a really hot day when we had our walking tour and Taka took extra care to help us find shade and keep cool. Walking tours are always a great way to see the highlights of a city and Taka was an excellent host. We really enjoyed our tour and the mix of sights and city highlights that he took us to. We had a great time seeing the top sights in Osaka with Taka. The highlight was definitely the castle. He was very patient and provided a great overview of the sites we visited. He also knew the best spots for photos. You are going to walk quite a bit on this tour but it’s the best way to see everything.
