Full description

Japan is a difficult country to eat gluten-free in, and ramen is the clearest example of why. The noodles are wheat. The gyoza wrappers are wheat. Soy sauce — which is in almost everything — is conventionally brewed with wheat, so even a broth that looks safe usually is not. Most visitors with coeliac disease or a genuine intolerance simply do not eat these dishes in Japan.

This three-hour class exists to fix that, and the instructor developed the recipes herself over more than a decade of professional cooking. You make both the ramen and the gyoza from scratch, gluten-free, including the noodles and the wrappers — which is the part that cannot be substituted with a shop-bought packet and is the reason the class runs to three hours.

Along the way you learn the Japanese techniques that transfer to anything else you cook: how a broth is built, how dumplings are pleated and why the fold matters to how they cook, and which Japanese seasonings are safe and which are not. Recipes and tips go home with you, which for anyone cooking gluten-free is the real value.

The setting is the instructor's own Japanese-style home in Higashiosaka rather than a commercial studio, and the group caps at four. Instruction is in English.

You eat the full meal you have made at the end. A sake pairing is available as an option.

The venue is a five-minute walk from Nukata Station. It is further out than central Osaka and worth the journey — for a lot of travellers this is the only bowl of ramen they will eat in Japan.

We attended a gluten-free ramen and gluten-free gyoza cooking class in Osaka, and it was an amazing experience! We joined the class as a couple, and we both had so much fun. The two-hour class flew by because it was so enjoyable. We learned how to make different kinds of ramen, and everything we cooked tasted absolutely delicious. I highly recommend this class to anyone visiting Osaka. The instructor also offers a variety of other cooking classes, both gluten-free and regular, so there’s something for everyone. We would definitely do it again. Thank you for such a wonderful experience!

I had an amazing cooking class with Yuki, where I learned how to make gluten free ramen and gyoza. I’ve tried many different ramen dishes in restaurants throughout Japan, but the ones cooked with Yuki were by far the best I’ve had so far. Yuki has truly mastered her recipes, and whether you eat gluten free or not, I can highly recommend her cooking class. It was definitely one of the highlights of my holiday in Japan.

Learn a lot about how to make yummy tasting ramen and potstickers. It was so good. My husband isn’t gluten free and he was worried he wouldn’t enjoy the food as much but he was happily surprised and absolutely enjoyed the food. I really love the variety and definitely was really delicious. Yuki was such a great host and the class has very personal and individual touch to it.
