Full description

Japan makes wine, and almost nobody who visits knows it. Grapes have been grown in Osaka prefecture since the early twentieth century, and the winery this tour visits was founded in 1914, which makes it the oldest in western Japan. It sits in Kashiwara, forty minutes by train from central Osaka, in a valley of vineyards that visitors to Dotonbori have no idea is there.

The tour starts at the winery bar and goes into the aging cellar — a hundred years old, designated a cultural heritage site, and still in use. Wine has matured in that room continuously for generations, and the smell of it tells you as much as any explanation. From there you walk out through the vineyards themselves.

The second half is the town. Kashiwara has Edo-period wooden buildings still standing on its streets and a camphor tree somewhere between 800 and 850 years old, which was already ancient when the first vines went in. It is the sort of ordinary Japanese town that is completely invisible from the tourist circuit and considerably more pleasant for it.

The tasting closes the two hours: three different Japanese wines with small bites, and admission to the wine museum included. Japanese wine is worth approaching with an open mind — the Koshu grape in particular produces something genuinely unlike anything European, light and faintly citric, built for the food it is drunk with.

Groups cap at twelve and the guide works in English. Additional tastings beyond the three are payable separately. Meeting is at the winery's direct sales shop in Taiheiji, Kashiwara.

Was unexpectedly alone for this tour with my guide Kai which made it even more special to learn abt the history of wine production in this city. I actually met the owner Risaburo Takai who is as jovial as you see on their Instagram profile. Kashiwara is a hidden gem of a place being this near to busy Osaka.

Our guide did a great job explaining the area and the wine making in Japan. We got a tour of the winery and museum, and we spoke with the owner of the Vineyard. We are quite this tour and we highly recommend it. Its easy to get to the Vineyard by train and it's a nice walk from the train station in a beautiful neighborhood. Hidden gem!

Such a great tour! Our guide was very knowledgeable about the winery and gave us an amazing tour. She shared many interesting and useful things, and we especially loved how she took us through the Shinto shrine, showed us beautiful views, and sharing her knowledge with us about local history, customs, etc. This was such a unique experience, the area was so nice and quiet, we felt like we had the entire vineyard to ourselves. This was so different compared to the rush and congestion of our tourist sites. And most importantly, the wine was fantastic.

Very informative Guide and an Interesting Winery. We also got to know local History and visited a beautiful Shrine. The Guide herself spoke very good english and answered all of our Questions. The different Wines and Juices tasted very good. We highly recommend this Tour to anyone that is interested in Japanese Culture and Wines.
