Full description
The maid cafe is the piece of Japanese pop culture that visitors find hardest to place. It is not a bar, not quite a restaurant and not a show in the ordinary sense; it is closer to interactive theatre, and it has been running in Akihabara since the early 2000s.
The format is consistent and entirely earnest. You are greeted at the entrance as if arriving somewhere else — men addressed as goshujin-sama, master, and women as ojou-sama — and the staff maintain the frame throughout. The omajinai, the magic words chanted over your food to make it taste better, is the moment most first-timers realise they are expected to join in, and the ones who do have a far better hour than the ones who fold their arms.
This particular chain is the largest and best known, and its Namba branch sits above the Nanbanaka streets in the middle of Osaka's entertainment district. What is included is more than most: a drink, a meal or dessert, a photograph with a maid, the table charge that catches people out elsewhere, and the omajinai ritual itself.
Four plans exist. Lunch is the cheapest, dinner slightly more, and there are pair and family packs for two and three people that work out cheaper per head. Extra options can be bought inside if you want more.
Go with the right expectation. This is deliberate, unapologetic kawaii culture rather than a window into traditional Japan, and it is best enjoyed by people willing to be part of it for an hour. Cynics have a miserable time and everyone can tell.
