Osaka Castle is the single most storied site in the city, but without context it is easy to walk its grounds and miss the drama entirely: the sieges, the betrayals, and the fall of the Toyotomi clan that ended Japan's warring states era right here. This three-hour guided walking tour puts a knowledgeable guide at your side to bring the samurai history of the castle to life stone by stone. Starting near Osakajokoen Station, the route moves through the Nishinomaru Garden, whose lawns give you the classic postcard view of the main tower rising above the moats, then through the wider Castle Park with its colossal stone walls, some assembled from single megaliths that daimyo hauled here to prove their loyalty. You will visit Miraiza Osaka-jo, the handsome former military headquarters building beside the tower, and Hokoku Shrine, dedicated to Toyotomi Hideyoshi himself, the peasant-turned-ruler who built the original castle and whose story your guide will unpack along the way. We liked the wealth of information about Shinto and the samurai the best. Unfortunately, the castle was very crowded, but the exhibition there was very well done.

The tour guide was really nice and was able to answer all of our questions. It was a lot of fun listening to her. 😊 I highly recommend it! The only thing that was a little odd was that we had to buy the tickets for the castle separately.
