Full description
Doing kimono, calligraphy and tea as three separate bookings takes three half-days and three sets of travel. This session runs them as one afternoon in the same room, in the order that makes sense, with a maximum of four people.
Kimono first, because everything after it is better done dressed. You choose from a collection and staff dress you properly — the layers, the padding, the obi — with simple hair styling included. It changes how you sit, which turns out to matter for the next two hours.
Calligraphy second. An instructor takes you through the brush: the upright grip, the ink load, and how pressure changes a stroke's width. You write a character of your choosing. This is the part most people expect to be the filler and end up spending the longest on.
Tea last, which is the correct order — the tea ceremony is designed to be the still point at the end of something, and arriving at it in kimono after an hour of concentration is close to how it is meant to be experienced. You learn the history and the reasoning behind the ritual rather than just watching it performed, and sweets are served with the matcha.
The four-person cap is what makes it work. This is close to a private session, which suits families and first-timers who would rather ask questions than keep up with a group of twenty.
The venue is on the second floor of a building in Uehonmachi, Tennoji Ward, reachable from two major stations. Instruction is in English throughout. Transport, extra styling and makeup are not included.

This was a wonderful and inspiring experience! The ladies were so careful during the dressing of the Komodo. The calligraphy was fun! The actual tea was very traditional and historical. Overall a beautiful experience.

The whole experience was amazing! Sachi is so wonderful! She spent so much time and effort on dressing me in my kimono and also doing my hair. She also made sure to take lots of pictures for me which means a lot as a solo traveller! The calligraphy was super fun but also challenging and the tea ceremony was magical, a very immersive experience to taste Japanese culture and meet a lovely friendly guide! I would highly recommend this experience to everyone!
Mika-sensei was absolutely delightful and made this experience so special for me and my Mum. she was incredibly accommodating for us and guided us the whole way. she explained each step of picking out the kimono and assisted with carefully dressing us and doing our hair. she even took many photos of us. The tea ceremony was the most beautiful thing I have experienced, Mika-sensei looked absolutely serene when performaning the ceremony and kindly showed me how too. Our calligraphy session was fun and informative, Mika-sensei was very encouraging and helpful! I am so pleased to have had this experience and think it is a must if visiting 💕✨
Sachi and Mika were so welcoming. They helped us select and get dressed into our kimonos and took loads of photos for us. Sachi demonstrated the calligraphy and guided us on how to write a word of our choosing. Then Mika performed the tea ceremony and again we were encouraged to take part. A truly memorable experience .
What a wonderful activity and a way to remember the old ways of life in Japan. Our guides were very kind and knowledgeable. The kimonos were so so beautiful and our guide showed us where to buy some. Pls add this to your itinerary when you visit Osaka! You will have a wonderful time
It was a surprise for my wife. It started with her picking a kimono from a large selection. My choice was easy - solid blue. Then the ladies in the shop helped dress us properly and got a few photos. We then did a calligraphy lesson - they were very patient with me - I picked Samurai which had 8 strokes…. I got it after a few attempts. We finished with a tea ceremony and making matcha tea ourselves. From the street you would never guess a tea room and Japanese ha den were inside. Directions were great Overall we had a great time and recommended this to anyone who wants a few hours of low stress fun.
