Full description
Everyone drinks in Namba. Umeda, the northern hub around Osaka Station, is where the city's office workers actually go after six, and it has three completely different layers stacked on top of each other — which is what this walk is built to show you.
Ohatsutenjin-dori comes first: a covered shopping arcade, unchanged in feel since the post-war decades, named for the shrine at its end where a famous 1703 double suicide took place and was turned into a puppet play that is still performed. Then the underground alleys, the low-ceilinged izakaya warrens beneath the station buildings that are almost impossible to find deliberately and impossible to leave once you are in. Then the high-rise district above, which is the Umeda most visitors see and the least interesting of the three.
You visit three izakaya, and unusually for a bar walk the food and drink are included rather than paid as you go: four alcoholic drinks, plus takoyaki, kushikatsu skewers, edamame and fried tofu across the stops. That makes the price higher than a guide-only crawl and considerably simpler to enjoy.
The group caps at six, which is the right size for izakaya counters and means you are talking to your guide rather than following a flag.
Meeting is in front of the main door of the Hankyu Tourist Center at Osaka Umeda, on the ground floor — easy to reach from Kyoto, Kobe or Namba, since Umeda and Osaka Station sit on top of each other.
