Full description
This is a 3.5-hour experience from Osaka, built around 八百源来弘堂本店 and Sakai Traditional Crafts Museum and Knife Shop. It is run by Japan Tour Adventure, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.
Osaka is Japan's kitchen: the city that invented takoyaki, okonomiyaki and kushikatsu, and Dotonbori's canal of neon signs is where it eats them. Osaka Castle is a 1931 concrete reconstruction of Hideyoshi's fortress with a museum inside and a moat and park worth an hour; Kuromon market is the food market; Shinsekai is the retro district under Tsutenkaku tower; Umeda Sky Building has the open-air observatory. Osaka is the base for day trips to Nara, Kobe, Himeji and Koyasan, all under an hour and a half. The city is louder and cheaper than Kyoto and its people are known for it.
The price covers Bilingual local guide, 1 sweet at the sweet shop, Shopping time, Access to the knife factory and Knife-sharpening technique lesson. It does not cover Extra food, Drinks and Shopping and souvenirs, so budget for those separately. Everything included is listed in full on this page; if something is not on that list, assume it is not in the price.
Sakai Station. We need at least one day's notice, and we confirm the date with Japan Tour Adventure before treating your booking as final. If they cannot take your date we tell you and refund you rather than leave you waiting.

Traveler Reviews
Remi was lovely and the Sakai knife makers skills where nicely shown. Brilliant walking tour for those interested in Kitchen / professional level knives for cooking or just learning something new.
I picked this tour for my husband because he loves knives. I knew he would get a lot out of it. Scott was our guide. He knew the ins and outs of the area and the local purveyors. I liked the mix of history of the area on the Portuguese “discovery” to the local vibe of going to a very old mochi shop where we tried their signature poppyseed mochi and cinnamon mochi. We also checked out the museum. The key is to go on Wednesdays because that is the only day where you visit the Knife Maker, Eric Chevallier. This was one of our highlights of the trip, learning and trying out how to hand forge! He i
I did the blacksmith walking tour and had Scott for the guide. Scott was great, really nice and friendly and knows how to get a group of strangers engaged. The tour is very interesting and has more to it than just visiting the blacksmith. We learnt about Sakai local history, visiting a traditional sweets shop and met with that owner. Then we went to meet the blacksmith Eric Chevalier, we got to see him at work, got a bit involved, learned a lot about blacksmithing. It was a really good and interesting day. Highly recommend it.
Our tour guide Remmi was incredibly knowledgeable. We learned so much from not only Sakai knife district but Japanese culture and traditions.
The guide was very helpful.. and even though it was raining it was worth it. thanks
Jean Yves was a great tour guide. Very knowledgeable, professional and personable. We enjoyed the all the places visited and it was special to watch Eric the blacksmith go through the various processes of knife making. Highly recommend.
Scott was a fantastic guide, sharing history and stories about Sakai and why its famous knives are masterpieces. The stellar moment was when Erick, the master blacksmith let us forge a piece of steel.
The tour was great. We walked through the Sakai district and visited an old original mochi maker / shop. Our guide Remy was very engaging and knowledgeable about the history of the area and associated stories. The knife museum was interesting and worthwhile seeing. The highlight was the visit to the blacksmith Eric who has his own small old style workshop. Seeing him work and talk through the steps of knife making was great. The highlight was definitely being given a go at hammering down the glowing steel as the starting point to making a knife. Would definitely recommend! Thanks
An excellent mixture of exploring the surroundings and learning something about the history of Japan and Sakai. The visit at the Mocchi shop was the highlight before we turned to the reason of our booking: knives. A short visit at the knives museum before we actually visited the factory. It was amazing to be able to peek over the masters shoulders while doing different steps in the knife production process. I also appreciated the hands-on-experience for knife sharpening. I'm confident I can handle it at home now. Our guide also perfectly supervised and translated our knife shopping. The final
The tour with Scott was very informative and entertaining. All topics were very exciting. Due to two simultaneous tours and a subsequent chaos, I only wanted to give a 4 star rating. However, the J.T.A. Team really every effort to offer the best possible experience. I noticed that when I was contacted after an accidental one star rating. So thumbs up! 5 stars and a clear recommendation ;)
The tour was amazing, one of the best I took in 2 month traveling Japan. To learn about the different crafts present in Sakai and experiencing them was amazing. Thank you for the tour.
The tour was great, the guide Jean-Yves explained everything with great enthusiasm and knowledge. It was fun, educational and a perfect way to look into the kitchen of a knife making industry. Thanks a lot!
