Full description

This is a 1.5-hour experience in Osaka. It is run by Japan Guide Stars, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.

Osaka is Japan's kitchen: the city that invented takoyaki, okonomiyaki and kushikatsu, and Dotonbori's canal of neon signs is where it eats them. Osaka Castle is a 1931 concrete reconstruction of Hideyoshi's fortress with a museum inside and a moat and park worth an hour; Kuromon market is the food market; Shinsekai is the retro district under Tsutenkaku tower; Umeda Sky Building has the open-air observatory. Osaka is the base for day trips to Nara, Kobe, Himeji and Koyasan, all under an hour and a half. The city is louder and cheaper than Kyoto and its people are known for it.

The price covers Authentic sumo demonstrations, Single bout sumo match, Training routines and Opportunity to face off against a sumo wrestler. Everything included is listed in full on this page; if something is not on that list, assume it is not in the price.

Japan Guide Stars sends the meeting point and time by email as soon as the booking is confirmed. We need at least one day's notice, and we confirm the date with Japan Guide Stars before treating your booking as final. If they cannot take your date we tell you and refund you rather than leave you waiting.

Amazing experience today! Loved watching the Sumos do their thing. The guys were super professional. We were also treated with a history lesson of Sumos which was really interesting. Definitely would recommend.

This experience was definitely worth it! The sumo wrestlers were fun all the while showing us different techniques (I didn'tknow the retired sumos would have achieved such a high rank) It is educational and great for kids. The host was great to she kept the crowd engaged. I was also greatful they allowed me to store several medium luggage and back packs. Lastly, the family that was welcoming guest and selling merchandise was very lovely too! This experience was worth the money.

This entire experience is what I was looking for. From providing the history is Sumo, learning about different techniques, watching a live match, and BEING ABLE TO PARTICIPATE. That is what I was really looking for, to be able to attempt. Photos & videos are included

A really fun experience for my wife and I. the Sumos were professional but also hilarious. I competed and had a lot fun doing so. My wife found me ending up on my backside hilarious. Best all round for history/culture of Sumo but also engagement would highly recommend.

We loved the Sumo wrestlers and the MC who provided a lot of background and context. Seemed that everyone who wanted to wrestle had a chance to get in the ring. Ryuu and Kai made the event educational and a great time! Loved getting our photo!

Yes — Nara is about 30-45 minutes by Kintetsu train for the deer park and Todai-ji, and Kyoto is roughly 29 minutes by JR Special Rapid. Both are easy half-day or full-day trips. See our Osaka to Nara guide and Osaka to Kyoto guide.
Takoyaki (octopus balls) and okonomiyaki (savory pancake) are Osaka's signature street foods, best sampled around Dotonbori and Kuromon Market. See our Osaka food guide.
Yes — it's the city's neon-lit entertainment and food district, and while it's undeniably touristy, the energy, canal-side glow, and street food density make it genuinely worth an evening. See the Dotonbori guide.
Shinsekai is Osaka's retro, slightly gritty downtown district built around the Tsutenkaku Tower, known for kushikatsu (fried skewers). It's generally safe for tourists, especially in the daytime and early evening. See the Shinsekai guide.
