Asahiyama Zoo: The Penguin Walk, and Why Winter Is the Season

Asahiyama was a small, failing municipal zoo that came close to closing in the 1990s. What turned it around was a change of approach the staff called behavioural display — designing enclosures around what an animal actually does rather than around how easily a visitor can see it standing still.

So the polar bears have a deep pool with a domed viewing capsule you put your head into from below, and they dive at you. The penguins have an underwater tunnel and fly past overhead. The seals swim through a vertical glass cylinder that connects two pools, which they do repeatedly because they like it.

It became one of the most visited zoos in Japan on that idea alone, and it is why it is worth two hours from Sapporo when there is a perfectly good zoo much closer.

The zoo's most famous event is the penguin walk: king penguins let out of their enclosure to walk a route through the snow, past visitors, and back. It exists because the birds need exercise in winter, and it is a genuine husbandry practice rather than a show.

The important qualification: it runs in winter only, and only when there is sufficient snow. Typically that means roughly the depth of the winter season, usually a couple of times a day, but it is cancelled if conditions are wrong, and the start and end dates move with the snow.

Do not build a whole trip around it without checking the zoo's current announcements. If it is running, get to the route early — it is the one thing everybody is there for.

Asahiyama runs separate summer and winter opening periods with a closure in between, and the hours differ substantially — winter days are short and the zoo closes in the middle of the afternoon.

That catches people out on a day trip. If you are coming from Sapporo, two hours each way against a mid-afternoon winter closing time means leaving early, not after a leisurely breakfast.

Summer has its own draw: night opening periods in August when nocturnal animals are active and the zoo stays open into the evening. It is a genuinely different visit from the daytime one.

From Sapporo, Asahikawa is about ninety minutes to two hours by limited express, then a bus to the zoo. It is doable independently and it is a long day.

The more common structure is a full-day tour that combines the zoo with Biei's Blue Pond and, in summer, the Furano lavender fields — all of which sit in the same direction. That packaging exists because the individual sights are each an hour or so and the driving between them is the bulk of the day.

If you have children, this is the single best day out from Sapporo and it is not close. If you do not, weigh it against the Otaru or Noboribetsu days, which are shorter.
