Sapporo Beer and Shiroi Koibito: Two Factories Worth the Time

Sapporo Beer is the oldest beer brand in Japan, founded in 1876, and it began here for a specific reason: Hokkaido was being settled and developed in the Meiji era with foreign technical advice, the climate suited barley and hops, and a brewery was a deliberate part of the industrial plan.

The museum occupies a red-brick malt house from 1890, which is itself the exhibit — a surviving piece of Meiji industrial architecture in a city that has very little old building left. The star on the chimney is the North Star, the emblem of the Hokkaido development commission, and it is why the beer has one.

Entry to the museum is free. A paid premium tour with tastings runs at intervals and includes a beer no longer sold commercially, brewed to the original recipe. That is the version worth booking.

Attached to the museum site is the Sapporo Beer Garden, a set of halls in the old brewery buildings where the local speciality is jingisukan — lamb grilled on a domed iron skillet over a burner, with vegetables cooked in the run-off fat.

The format is all-you-can-eat-and-drink for a fixed period, usually a hundred minutes, and it is loud, smoky and enormously fun. The domed skillet shape is said to represent a Mongol helmet, which is where the dish's name comes from.

A practical warning that everyone learns the hard way: you will smell of grilled lamb afterwards. Plastic bags are provided for coats for exactly this reason. Do not go straight to a nice dinner or a flight.

Shiroi Koibito — 'white lover' — is a white-chocolate-filled langue-de-chat biscuit, and it is the souvenir of Hokkaido; you will see the tins in every airport in Japan.

The factory that makes them is wrapped in a mock-Tudor English village with clock towers, rose gardens and automated musical displays on the hour. It is completely unrestrained and it is aimed squarely at families, and it works on them.

Inside you can watch the production line through glass, and the paid workshop where you decorate your own giant heart-shaped biscuit is the actual draw for children. It is on the western edge of the city, a short walk from Miyanosawa station on the Tozai subway line.

Adults with no children in tow can reasonably skip it. With children, it and Asahiyama Zoo are the two things that will get remembered.

They are on opposite sides of Sapporo — beer to the east, chocolate to the west — so doing both in one day means crossing the city twice. It is manageable on the subway and it is not an elegant day.

If you are choosing one: the beer museum for adults, Shiroi Koibito for families. If doing both, take the beer garden slot in the evening so the meal anchors the end of the day.

Sapporo's other indoor options cluster in the centre — the Clock Tower, the old Red Brick Government Building, and the Nijo Market for seafood — which makes a wet-weather day easy to fill without leaving the middle of the city.
