Snorkeling Needs No Certification — and the Maldives Is Built for It
Snorkeling in the Maldives doesn't require any training, and the country's reef structure makes it unusually rewarding for it: many resorts and guesthouses sit directly on a house reef, meaning you can snorkel from the beach without a boat, while guided boat trips reach sites further out for nurse sharks, stingrays and reef fish in close, shallow water. Guided snorkeling trips targeting specific wildlife — nurse sharks, stingrays, turtles — are widely available and generally the better choice for a first visit over a self-guided house-reef swim, since a guide knows where the animals actually are that day.
Water temperature stays warm year-round (generally mid-to-high 20s°C), so a wetsuit is optional rather than necessary for most snorkelers.
